Core:
The core device must be a Router as it needs to connect multiple office with the Data Center. In our configuration, our Data Center acts as a Hub Location and all our other br
anch offices as well as the home office acts as a spoke location. The Core router is responsible for communication between various branch locations and the data center and between branches themselves. To connect multiple networks we need to be able to perform routing between them which is the primary function of a router.
Distribution A and Distribution B
These devices are layer 3 switches that support inter-vlan routing and performs the aggregation function of various access switch. These switches are generally Gigabit Ethernet switches that support high speed communication between the Core and access layer devices.
Access A and Access B
These devices are layer 2 switches that perform the function of providing access layer functions to the connected devices. These switches act as a common broadcast domain but has separate collision domains for each port.
SOD, MOD, POD, BOD, COD:
All these devices can single routers containing an LAN ethernet port NIC card or a combination of a Router and an access switch. These devices need to perform the function of routing the traffic between inside network (the office network) and the outside network (the WAN links). These devices also need to perform access layer tasks like communication between various devices connected on the LAN. This includes connection to local server and printer and between various local machines.
HOG:
This device is a simple wireless accesspoint that converts the wired link from modem into a wifi signal that allows multiple devices to connect through wireless medium.
