The first book of the Australian Catholic University published in the name of ‘This is my song’ would engage thousands of readers. The book of the year may stimulate students of different age groups to reflect on the the
me of Hope, being a part of the new program that can recognize the power of fiction in building up empathy as well as improve psychological wellbeing. ‘This Is My Song’ written by Richard Yaxley, the Book of the Year for 2020, would represent a three-generation family story including a grandfather who survived Auschwitz and his grandson revived a song written by his grandfather before the war. From the character of the grandson who retrieved the song after decades, the novel glorifies the side of psychological well-being. During the 1940s, the musician Rafael Ullmann was sent to a Nazi concentration camp. During the 1970s, Annie Ullmann lived a lonely life in a Canadian prairie. Following three decades, Joe Hawker, in Australia, became uncertain about himself as well as his future until he discovered a song, written by his grandfather Rafael Ullmann many years ago. For Annie, the song was like ‘this is my song, this is my blood". Being imprisoned for decades in a solitary sale, Annie felt rescued through the song written by his grandfather. The song crossed three continents and time-lines enchanting the need for every one of them to find out their own music, to sing to the fullest what they love most (Camerer et al., 2015). The feeling was compelling and unforgettable as the music made one lonely sole to get cherished for life. Annie felt the urge to live life to the fullest even if he lost everything he could regain it through the spirit of his living. Annie ultimately found his life through the song of his blood and went into the search of his grandfather, virtually what never happened in his lifetime.
