Hope everyone is doing well. I can’t believe we are in the last two weeks of this class. Time flies. This week we are focused on Sports Physical Therapy and their decision to transfer from an in-house database system to a central cloud-computing database system. Let’s first look at the different options that are available to Sports Physical Therapy for centralized computing.

Cloud-based architecture:This option would allow Sports Physical Therapy to store their data on a server that is centrally located and accessible from anywhere in the world. This would provide fast processing servers to enable faster access to their database and faster modification of data. Additionally, this will give Sports Physical Therapy other options, such as managing and retrieving data efficiently and in a timely manner.

Data Warehouse:This type of database architecture will allow the employees of Sports Physical Therapy the ability to focus on their daily job responsibilities without having to worry about security and integrity as this type of database architecture is a single storage of data at a highly isolated place which provides high security and integrity to the user data. Data warehouse architecture will also provide Sports Physical Therapy analytical requirements without taking them away from traditional operations.

Client/server architecture:This architecture is where it would allow Sports Physical Therapy to utilize a server or a mainframe computer which will store all the data for the organization and will allow Sports Physical Therapy to deliver and manage their database including other centralized resources. Moreover, client/server architecture would allow Sports Physical Therapy employees to cooperatively work with a client computer to run an entire application when working on work related tasks.

Centralized approach:If Pitt Fitness decides to go with this approach, it would allow Pitt Fitness to utilize a single centrally located computer system which will process all of Sports Physical Therapies data (Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

The choice solely depends on Sports Physical Therapy, as there are other options available to them. The choices mentioned above would be a great start as it will be their first time transitioning to a cloud-computing platform.

To create front-end and back-end Access database from a single database, Sports Physical Therapy would need to perform the following steps:

  • Close all open objects(Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

  • Click the Database Tools tab on the ribbon(Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

  • Click the Access Database button (Database Tools tab | Move Data group)(Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

  • Click Split Database.

  • Select the location and enter the name for the back-end database(Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

  • Click Split in the Create Back-end Database dialog box(Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., Monk, E., 2020).

The above steps will allow Sports Physical Therapy to split their database between the front-end and back-end to improve performance.

First, before we go into what should be done with Sports Physical Therapy, let’s talk about what the centralized approach is. According to our textbook, Chapter 9, it explains that the centralized approach is based on one main computer, and all the data is processed, (Friedrichsen, L., Ruffolo, L., & Monk, E., 2020). There are other ways to have the centralized concept. There is also the cloud concept with racks of servers. This is accessed through the internet, to connect to servers, storage devices, and high-speed internet.

Now that it is talked about, which one would be good enough? Well, from a personal standpoint, how many clinics are around, or if there is just one location. If there is just one location, then the centralized server would be perfect with one location. This way the connection would be solid and not have to worry about any connection issues. It would also be smart to have a backup server.

If there we multiple locations, then the cloud servers would be best. This is being said because one main clinic will have the servers while the other clinics would be connected by smaller servers and internet connections. If you think about it, it just must be seen as what is more convenient for the clinic. How secure are the servers and how stable will the connection be? The best in my opinion would be the centralized approach of having one server.

  • The Sports Physical Therapy clinic is considering centralizing their database operations. What are their options for this centralized computing?

Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing allows the employees, analysts, stakeholders, executives, and customers to access the company's data through the internet. The cloud computing service is managed by a service provide, or a cloud provider who builds, and manages the cloud infrastructure (Friedrichsen et al., 2020, p. 283).

Client/Server Architecture. A Client Server Architecture is distributed application structure that separate tasks between the providers of a resource or service, called servers, and service requesters called clients (GeeksforGeeks, 2019, para 1). In the client-server architecture, when the client computer sends a request for data to the server through the internet, the server accepts the requested process and deliver the data packets requested back to the client. Clients do not share any of their resources (GeeksforGeeks, 2019, para 1).

Data Warehouse. A Data warehouse is the collection of data to support the executives, or management's decision making process (Friedrichsen et al., 2020, p. 283). A Data Warehouse can combine both antique and new information into one place and can retain the information for a long period of time (Friederichsen et al., 2020, p. 283).

  • The Sports Physical Therapy clinic is having trouble with the performance of their Access database. They would like to split the database between front end and back end to improve performance. How would they do this?

To streamline data and prevent network congestion, the Sports Therapy Clinic would have to split their networking traffic between a front-end and back-end database. The front-end database will contain objects, reports and actual data (Friedrichsen, 2020, page 283). The back-end database will contain actual data saved on the server (Friedrichsen, 2020, p. 283). According to Friedrichsen et al., Figure 9-8, to split the database the following steps must be completed:

5. Select the location and enter the name for the back-end database (Friedrichsen et al., 2020, p. 283).

6. Click Split in the Create Back-End Database dialog box (Friedrichsen et al., 2020, p. 283).

I also found this video on Youtube created by Kirt Kershaw where he walked through the process of splitting between the front-end and back-end database. As a visual learner, this helped me conceptualize the process. I hope it helps! The link is located in my references below.
