Case Study


Nigel is blind. He has an office job – his workplace has provided adaptive technology so he can do his work.
Every day Nigel’s carer takes him to work. He is able to use a cane to manoeuvre around the workplace. Nigel was allocated a guide dog after working in the office for a few months. This is very exciting for Nigel as he can finally be independent and get to work by himself.
Nigel’s dog has been in the workplace for two weeks now. Nigel’s manager has called him into his office. The manager expresses his deep sorrow – Nigel can no longer keep his job. Two members of staff have complained about the dog. One of the staff members stepped in dog faeces on the grass outside the office, and the other one has developed hay fever, which she believes is due to an allergy to animals.
Nigel is distraught – the dog is meant to make things easier for him, not make him lose his job!

1) If we see the history for last hundred years than the treatment towards the people with some sort of disability was very bad and cruel. These peopl
e were viewed as sick people with unhealthy conditions and defective physical attributes and often they were even looked down and abandoned by their own families and put into rehabilitation homes. For centuries, society as a whole treated these people as objects of fear and pity. They were made to feel insecure and were not given full respect as someone who is also a part of the society. Though this scenario is changing a bit in last few decades due to advances and upgradation in medical care but still such social behaviour of people is prevalent in various societies.
2) There are both physical and mental disabilities in humans. Certain disabilities happen due to disintegration of the nervous system. There are social and medical model of service being extended to the people with disabilities. The social model treats disabled people with social interactions and behavioural aspects to improve their health condition whereas medical model revolves around medications and clinical treatments. Medical model deals with a specific disease with specific therapy while social model deals with the analysis of health improvement in disabled people by meeting their basic social needs.
3) In the context of disability in individuals the self-directed approach means that the person is self-sufficient and is not dependent on external help. Here the person with a disability is self-reliant and can plan, design and implement the services and support they need...
