BS4S14 Research Methods Assessment 1 Brief Assessment 1: Project Output 1 Assessment Description Summary: Each student is required to select a topic relevant to their professional / business interests and conduct a pilot study or a small scale exploratory research into this topic. Specifically, you will be expected to formulate a specific research question, identify, describe and justify the methods used and proceed to conduct a small scale research project into the topic chosen. In the proposal, each student will be required to submit a topic for research relevant to their professional / business interests and needs and after from a list of suggested topics compiled by the module leader or suggested by students. You will be expected to formulate a relevant specific research question. Then you will need to identify, clearly describe and justify the methods you will use to answer the research question and then conduct a small scale research investigation where collected data is analysed using appropriate analytic techniques. You may use software tools to help with the analysis, for example quantitatively using analytics software such as Minitab, SPSS, STATA etc., or qualitatively using QDAS such as Nvivo or ATLAS.ti. MS Excel is also a popular spread sheet tool for basic data analysis. Note that the emphasis should be on the understanding of the data analytic process irrespective of what tools are actually used. The project output should incorporate elements of (i) an introduction, (ii) a relevant literature review, (iii) details on the study design, (iv) explanation of the analysis performed and discussion of the results; please refer to the Assessment Criteria document for more details. It should be presented in the form of a portfolio of not more than 4800 words, using appropriate reporting conventions and ensuring all sources are cited and referenced using the Harvard style. Page 2 of 2 BS4S14 Research Methods Assessment 2 Brief Assessment 2: Report 1 Assessment Description Summary: Each student is required to produce an individual reflective journal documenting their experience while undertaking the main research project of this module. This style of reflective report is intentionally less structured to allow you to express your individual thoughts and opinions freely and openly. While there is no right or wrong answer your reflection should illustrate how you have developed your ability with what was covered in this module. To complete this journal try to focus on i) what you have learnt about yourself and what you gained through this experience. For example, think of: How the topic informed your thinking? How did you benefit? Were you proactive or reactive? What did you discover about your personality? etc. and also reflect on ii) the challenges faced while working on the project. What were they? How did you overcome them? If not, why not? Then proceed to report on the effect the project had on iii) your philosophical school (post positivist, pragmatist, constructivist, etc.) by reflecting on your ontological, axiological and epistemological stance, before, during and after the project and iv) inform on how you managed the ethical issues encountered in producing this work; such as data confidentiality, obtaining informed consent, debriefing participants, etc. You should present your report in the form of a 1200 word (+/10%) reflective journal. You are advised to support your reflections by researching relevant literature on reflective writing, and ensuring all sources are cited and referenced using the Harvard style. 2.Essential information: All module summative assessments Assessment Project Output 1 Report 1 Deadline End of Week 10 End of Week 11 Word Count 4800 (+/- 10%) 1200 (+/- 10%) Weight 80% of Module Marks 20% of Module Marks Assessments should be uploaded to the submission link in the VLE by 11pm (23:00 hours) VLE (UTC) time on the due date at the latest. Introduction
This research report played an important role in my learning process with respect to employee motivation and benefits of reward system. Organisational progress and growth is highly dependent upon employee functioning and it would be essential to consider that employee motivation is dynamic. I have identified the significance of employee satisfaction and motivation in the success of any organisation. Moreover, this was also one of the major aim behind conducting this research. Another major aim and objective behind conducting this research was to understand different concepts, strategies as well as w
ay in which reward system could be used, implemented and be beneficial for the companies. Data collection allowed me to understand the various concepts as well as, type of data collection methods available. Likewise, after data analysis I was able to reach a significant conclusion.
Similarly, I was also able to present some recommendations, which company could use in order to satisfy their employees. It would be essential to consider that this self-reflection would be a personal response to the situations, experience as well as, the situations faced by me while conducting this study. In other words, this report could also be presented as a mirror, which will reflect my personalities, habits I used to possess before this research project and skills that I may have acquired after the completion of this research project. Challenges faced while conducting this research are considered as the opportunity for self-improvement in future. Accordingly, this report will also allow me to heighten the awareness towards effective learning strategies along with the areas pointed out as the areas for improvement.
Further, this report could also be used as a reference in order to identify and measure the level of improvement. Skills already possessed by me should be enhanced and after the completion of the research project, I should have acquired new skills. This reflection report is based upon the research project submitted before. Reflection on the work is one of the excellent methods in order to analyse and self-grade the work done by you. After analysing the project report with other reports, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses in the report. Further, self—reflection on the presented repot also allowed me to analyse the challenged faced while working on the project report.
Eventually, I was also able to identify the alternate approaches, which could have been used in order to eradicate those challenged while working on the project report. Accordingly, while working on the project reported there were certain ethical issues, which I was able to eradicate and this knowledge and concepts of ethical issues was new for me. Nevertheless, all the challenges and alternate solutions identified in this reflective journal would allow me to understand and identify areas where I can improve for future references.
Learnings Acquired From This Report
While working on this report, first learning, which I was able to acquire, was the structure and organisation of report. Usual reports could be submitted casually; however, this was my first research project where I myself conducted the research and then analysed the gathered data. Arranging the report into parts and then subparts was the first learning, which I was able to acquire. Likewise, referencing was another major learning, which I acquired such as, the in texting of authors along with the data taken from scholarly articles. I was not aware of the fact that the websites also follow a separate referencing style; however, I learnt this while working.
This research report allowed me to understand the existing as well as, new concepts. I knew some of concepts such as reward system in the organisation, benefits of employee satisfaction and much more; however, I was unaware of the relationship between these. Further, various strategies, which companies could use in order to inculcate reward system with in their functioning and enhance their employee satisfaction was also a new learning for me.
As presented in the project report also, significance of this research was to identify the relationship between employee satisfaction and the rewards provided by organisations. I was able to identify those different factors can influence employee happiness; however, now I understand that those factors might not be sufficient to motivate them. Therefore, now I know that employee happiness and motivation are linked; however, they might not have a significant impact on each other.
Objectives of this research were in consideration with the thesis and the fourth objective ‘To recommend the different ways, through which the incentives can be implemented more’ was included in order to suggest the reward strategies and incentives, which companies could inculcate in their functioning. I was well aware of the fact that monetary and non-monetary are two reward systems provided by the organisations; however, not all of them might be able to provide the required motivation and happiness to the employees. Another major factor to consider here is that I went through and read a lot of research papers and journal articles before designing the thesis statement for this project. I do know that after designing the research aims and objectives, literature review is done; however, I wanted inculcate the untouched aspects of variables included in my thesis statement. Likewise, it is evident from the research question, ‘What are the different ways, through which the incentives can be implemented more?’ that I not only want to identify and focus upon existing strategies rather I also wanted to present more incentive schemes and strategies in order to facilitate employee satisfaction.
I have read literature reviews from number of journals and articles and I was well aware that literature review set the background for the current research and also emphasise upon areas, which might not been touched. However, I was not much aware of the methodology followed while conducting literature review that is identifying and retrieving relevant research papers. I was able to learn that search engines such as Google might not be the best source for extracting academic literature. Rather other databases such as Google scholar are much preferable. While extracting the scholarly articles, I was able to identify that customisation of literature can be done and the preferable year could be set for the extraction of scholarly articles.
Another major benefit, which I found while working on Google Scholar, was the various citations provided for every article in almost every referencing style such as APA, Harvard, Chicago, MLA and much more. Retrieval of articles is facilitated through keywords and I was not much aware of this concept. Machi and McEvoy (2016) presented and specifically argued upon the fact that, while conducting the literature review, I identified that it follows a specific structure including major themes, major concepts to be highlighted, special focus on influential studies and much more. Likewise, I also identified that the major focus areas in a literature review are of agreement, disagreements, contentious and tensions related to your topic. Literature reviews itself follows a specific structure and includes an introduction, main body and conclusion. Conclusion of literature review must emphasise upon the area defining what you might be including in the current research and how it is distinct from existing literature.
While working on the methodology of this research project I came across numerous study designs, which could be used in order to proceed with this project. Here I learnt how to choose a perfect and suitable research methodology for the project by understanding each type of research methodology. Explanatory research study is conducted for a project, which has not been well researched before, as it demands priorities and will generate operational definitions in order to provide a better research model for the next research (Joffe et al. 2016). In other words, I understood that explanatory research design is just analysis of prior studies in order to present a better research design for your study. Considering the current research, I could not use explanatory research design because it was not well suited for the thesis and the choice of my variables.
Rather I chose exploratory-descriptive designs in order to work in natural settings actually, for fieldwork. Further, the data collected in this research design further contributes to the development of theory and explain the chosen phenomenon. I also learnt that exploratory research design has numerous advantages over the other research designs such as, adaptability and flexibility towards change. In other words, the data collected can be easily analysed according to the will of researcher. Further, I also learnt that this research design is highly effective when it comes to laying the groundwork for the future studies that is the study performed by me, could be easily used by other researchers. One of the major factor behind choosing this study was the...
