Do you believe that there is too much or too little redundancy in our healthcare delivery system?

Pharmacy prices are are at it's all time high, the only reprieve we have is when a major disaster happens as we are in now. Most of the medications we take does not cure the problem they are just prolonged. A lot of monies is being spent on these medications with no definitive results. I was elated to find that there was a medication for Hepatitis C that would cure the disease, until a friend of mine told me he still has it, and the side effects had him in bed for days, and it is very costly.

Some reasons the medication is so expensive is the brand's name like Johnson&Johnson, Pfizer, Merck and Novartis are brand names that are most expensive according to, The Atlantic" (2019), Abiraterone is manufactured under the brand name Zytiga by Johnson & Johnson. To justify the price, the company pointed me to its “2017 Janssen U.S. TransparencyReport,” which states: “We have an obligation to ensure that the sale of our medicines provides us with the resources necessary to invest in future research and development.” In other words, the prices are necessary to fund expensive research projects to generate new drugs".

Although this does make sense there should be other ways when you think of the geriatric patients, the children it should be other alternatives to paying for their medication. I see the commercials on television saying that they have to choose between medication and groceries or sometimes get a partial prescription. I think this very redundant. I think they should come up with a discount for seniors and children that cannot afford the medication. My pharmacy will give you 4 or 5 pills until you see your doctor if it is essential, like high blood pressure medication or Diabetes. We should have more redundancy in pharmaceutical pricing.

Throughout history, the way we service patients have changed, if you needed to see a doctor you would have to go to the local barber, now doctors, nurses, and assistants must have credentials to prove they are quantified to practice. There have also been strides in healthcare that have changed how we treat patients as well these achievements include in the 21st-century sterilization of equipment has saved countless individuals from cross-contamination, and germs entering patient’s bodies (McCarthy, 2015).

The next advancement introduced equipment such as X-rays, MRI machines and other scanning equipment that allowed the healthcare system to understand the molecular biology and endocrinology (McCarthy, 2015). This advancement allowed how to treat many ailments such as high blood pressure and other vascular problems. High intense microscopes have allowed the discovery of good bacteria and microorganisms that live on our skin, along with the ability to teat the bad bacteria that were also discovered with microscopes.

In the 1940s the development of penicillin and other antibiotics has allowed the treatment of illnesses (McCarthy, 2015). This advancement I feel is the most important it was also the start of research of vaccinations that have saved millions of lives over the decades. Redundancy in our health care delivery system can be a good thing. How many times can you tell someone who has the beginnings of cancer to stop smoking, or how many times can you tell an obese patient to get some help losing weight? However, there is also a bad side as well there are times where your doctor seems distant and not really lessoning. I have struggled with talking to doctors who seem to want to get you in and out of the office instead of treating the problem. From this perspective, it becomes redundant to continue to visit this office and find a doctor who is willing to address the problem the patient has.
