Introduction
· Care delivery is an essential part of healthcare and end of life care is no exception.
· Palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of life during end time of the patient.
· There are different approaches and standards of palliative care discussed ahead.
This presentation would discuss palliative care as an essential part of patient’s life during their end time as well as their families. Further, efforts would be made to present a comprehensive summary of standards of palliative care along with the role of multidisciplinary team in end of life care. This presentation will conclude with several challenges and their solutions in end of life care.
1. Palliative Care
· Palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases.
· It is focused upon providing relief to the patients and their families from stress and illness.
· It helps to match the treatment options with the goals of patient.
Palliative care is an emerging concept because it has the potential to provide relief to the patients and their families from symptoms as well as stress of illness. Decision-making can become difficult for the patient as well as the family members. Therefore, major goal behind providing end of life care or palliative care is to provide best quality treatment for the patients as well as their family.
Wallerstedt, Benzein, Schildmeijer and Sandgren (2019) mentioned and argued that usually, patients during end of their life have been reported to suffer from pain, depression, isolation, fatigue, constipation and loss of appetite, nausea, anxiety and much more, which affects the willingness to live. Therefore, palliative care team allows the family members as well as the patient to gain collective strength and carry on with daily life routine. Likewise, as supported by Lastrucci et al. (2018), patients or individuals that receive palliative care can live longer compared to the patients, which did not receive end of life care.
2. Palliative Care Approach in Healthcare
· Palliative care approach in healthcare includes a whole spectrum of care such as, nursing, medical, social and much more.
· Palliative care involves care from a team of specialists who work together to provide best possible care.
· It can be provided easily in community health centres, children homes and tertiary care facilities.
Palliative care principles in healthcare are simply regarded as those of good clinical practice irrespective of patient’s illness. Palliative care or end of life care is provided to the patients irrespective of patient’s social status, culture, education or any other determinant (Wallerstedt, Benzein, Schildmeijer & Sandgren, 2019).
It would be essential to understand that palliative care has to be provided by a team of specially trained doctors, nurses as well as other healthcare providers, which further provides an extra layer of support. Further, Sawatzky et al. (2016) suggested that the concept of palliative care is based majorly upon the needs of patient rather than on patient’s prognosis. Therefore, Lennaerts et al. (2019) mentioned and argued that palliative care is appropriate at any age as well as at any stage of illness along with curative treatment.
3. Standards of Palliative Care
· Palliative care is a person as well as family centred care.
· Standards of palliative care allow professionals to be strongly responsive towards the needs of patient and their family members.
· There are overall 13 standards for providing palliative care in Australia.
It would be essential to understand that palliative care standards are developed to clearly articulate and promote the vision for appropriate specialist palliative care as well as compassionate care. Further, these standards also allow recognition for the importance of care, which needs to be patient centred and their family centred (Palliative Care Australia, 2020). There are overall 13 standards for providing palliative care where standard 1 focuses on decision-making and care planning.
