When setting a goal that you want to achieve, it should be thoughtfully planned out and feasible. SMART is a guideline for setting goals, and SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. Specifically, in business, SMART goals can have a meaningful impact on the success of an organization. Now that inclusion and equity have been added making them SMARTIE goals, businesses can put emphasis on how they make an impact socially. According to the Racial Equity Tools Glossary, inclusion is “authentically bringing traditionally excluded individuals and/or groups into processes, activities, and decision/policy making in a way that shares power.” And equity refers to the outcomes that are available to you.



When making the decision to hire new global managers there is plenty of value in global managers using SMARTIE goals. Global managers who utilize SMARTIE goals when hiring will help others reach leadership roles who may otherwise have been excluded. They will help close the racial gap in global management and obtain diversity. They can also train other global managers to recognize stereotypes and implicit bias. Then we will have more global leaders and organizations utilizing inclusion and equity with their SMART goals. Utilizing SMARTIE goals will also help reduce things like White privilege, systemic racism, and other inequities that are embedded in our system. While it will take continuous work to strive for inclusion and equity, it is essential that our global leaders take initiative and help eliminate biases for race, gender, and religion.

SMART goals used to be the standard for goal setting in the workplace. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Ambitious, Relevant/Realistic, and Timebound. SMART goals may become a thing of the past. "We improve SMART goals and transform them into SMARTIE goals by adding Inclusion and Equity" (Be a SMARTIE: An Equity-Forward Approach to Goal Setting, 2021). Adding Inclusion provides an opportunity to be more inclusive with individuals and groups. Adding Equity provides an opportunity for more environments to be fair and equal. If global managers start using SMARTIE goals instead of SMART goals to hire other global managers, this will help ensure that the business that they are running will be set up for the most success. Success in a company starts at the top. Without a manager that incorporates SMARTIE goals, the business may suffer. It is essential that when hiring a global manager, SMARTIE goals are discussed. It is important to know their intentions with the business and where they see the business going with their goals in mind. If the global manager candidate is incapable of setting a realistic SMARTIE goal, then they aren't the right person for the job.


A multicultural work force can improve a company's productivity significantly. Some benefits include: variety of perspective, better decision making, increased creativity, better innovative abilities, increase in profits, enhances problem solving, employee engagement, better company reputation, better hiring abilities, community relations, and market opportunities (Smith, 2019). While encouraging a multicultural work force is important, it is also important to have employees undergo diversity training. This will ensure that the work environment thrives and provides an equal and adequate opportunity for growth.
