Extended Response Format Source Analysis Process and Format An extended response requires that you address two required tasks. Task One Interpret each source, identify and explain the ideological perspective presented (the “ism” presented) in each source, and discuss the links between the principles of _______________ and each source. To ensure that you address and competently complete this first required task, it is important that you complete the analysis in a logically organized format. The following example is a suggested format: · Interpret/explain what the source is saying/showing. · State the ideological perspective of the source (state the “ism” of the source) define the I/P, and then explain must how the “ism” is depicted/presented/discussed in the source in order to support your statement of the “ism”. · Discuss how the I/P of the source links to specific principles of _________ by explaining how the source shows support of the principle(s) of _________, or criticizes/rejects the principle(s) of _________. (Quote some evidence from the source, for support.) (Repeat this format for Source B and Source C paragraphs) Task TWO Identify and explain the relationships that exist among the sources. A suggested format for the second required task is: · State the principle that links or relates to the three sources · Discuss how the linking principle is present in each source · Identify and explain another relationship between two of the sources (being sure to state another linking principle). To summarize, the extended response format is: · Source A analysis paragraph · Source B analysis paragraph · Source C analysis paragraph · Relationship between the three sources, and relationship between two sources paragraph Extended Response Format Source Analysis Process and Format An extended response requires that you address two required tasks. The relationship between Sources A, B, and C is the principle of _____________________________________________. Next, discuss how the linking principle is present in each source: In Source A, the principle of __________________________________ is shown by ______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________In Source B, ___________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lastly, in Source C, ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To score a top mark on the relationship of sources (task two), the identification and explanation of an additional relationship(s) stating another linking principle between two of the sources is advised. Read / examine each source carefully. This is the interpretation part! • Highlight or underline key words; make brief notes beside each source. This is the analysis part! • Make sure you understand each source to the best of your ability. This is the comprehension part and it's not always easy. Your understanding of key terms and vocabulary is absolutely essential! • Identify and explain the perspectives (points of view) in each source. Write about and discuss what's going on in each source or what each seems to be about at a basic level. • You may do this by referring to or discussing any / all of the following: - Main points, concepts, themes, and / or ideas being conveyed - Ideological perspective(s) being presented - Personal viewpoints / opinions being expressed - Any other secondary ideas, such as whether the source seems slanted or biased and reasons that might account for this. 2. You must also discuss the links between each source and the ideology of globalization. It is not enough to just say "All three sources are about the ideology of globalization.. .we already know that! • Identify and explain one or more relationship(s) among the sources. This can be done in many different ways. For example, you may do any / all of the following: -Identify and discuss a common idea / theme / concept they share -Identify common or differing perspectives they bring to the main idea / theme -Explain how they are similar or different (compare and contrast) -Refer to common or divergent underlying values and belief systems • You may also discuss how any two of the sources are linked together.
