Organizational behavior is the study of how employees behave and perform in a work place setting. This examination of the complex workings of a company gives us the opportunity to better increase performance, looks at what motivates people, and helps the workplace run smoother and more effectively (The Important of Organizational Behavior). If an organization wants their employees to work better as a team, they need to assess four key components. These components are common purpose, coordinated effort, division of labor, and hierarchy of authority (Components of an Organization).

Every organization has to have a clear purpose that is known and accepted by all employees. This gives all parties a purpose and main direction. If the common purpose is not communicated to all by the people in authority, the company can become disorganized. This can be done through developing a mission statement and clearly stating the goals of the organization. When a company has many employees, they must work together as a team in a coordinated effort. This ensures all are working together and everyone is doing their part equally. This is also achieved through division of labor. A goal cannot be achieved by only one person. A manager needs to delegate and divide the labor to effectively use everyone’s skills to achieve the goal. Everyone brings a unique skill set to the team and to not use those skills appropriate mismanages the team (Components of an Organization). A chain of command is also important to ensure things are done appropriately. While everyone should contribute to the team and goal, you must have someone who makes the final decisions. This person/people help “steer the ship” towards its destination (Components of an Organization). These organizational behavior components, as well as other factors, all contribute towards an organization running as smoothly as possible to achieve their goal.

As a senior manager in my current position, I see how these components can either keep the workplace running smoothly or can cause breakdown. I am constantly encouraging my fellow senior managers to communicate more with our subordinates, as I feel they sometimes feel like management is not working with them, but against them. This causes disorganization, unmet professional expectations, and unhappy employees. With recent changes in management, we are now working more effectively as a team, utilizing everyone’s skills, and allowing all to feel involved in the running of our organization. I am hopeful these components can be applied to make for a more structures and efficiently run company in the future.

The meaning of Organizational Behavior is the study of human behavior in a work place setting. It studies how individuals and groups interact as well as the organization’s interaction. All three are linked and needed to obtain the full understanding of organizational behavior. Chapter 1 Management and Organizational Behavior states that “a model of organizational behavior is presented, consisting of five building blocks: individuals and groups, tasks and technology, organization design, organizational processes, and management.”

In my personal experience and observations over the past 8 years that I have been employed by the same organization has been that it depends on who you know more than what you know. There seems to be one specific person or group of people that are chummy with the immediate supervisor and seem to get their way most of the time. The rest of us have learned that if we need something to be done we hint to that person or group what is needed and make it seem as if it was their idea so that things will get done. It is demoralizing but on the positive side it gets the job done. The same can be said for promotions; the person who is closer to the hiring managers are the ones that get the job. It becomes a cycle, then the people who were close with said employee who got promoted, gets a step up and has the ear of that said employee.

The OB of an employee depends primarily on the components of the organization which includes common purpose, coordinated effort, division of labor and the hierarchy of authority. All these components collectively shape the behavior of an employee. I agree on the point that all the organizations should have clear purpose which is known and accepted by all as it could reduce the chances of...
