Aim



The aim of the comprehension is to test your understanding of the key concepts outlined in the first few weeks of the module. This understanding will then inform your research work for the second assignment. The comprehension is intended to be developmental. Written feedback will be provided on your work. This will give you the opportunity to further develop your understanding before you submit your media content analysis report.



The assignment is in 3 sections; make sure that you address all 3 sections. The bibliography does not count towards the 800 words. Students are permitted to go 10% under or over without penalty. In 800 words:



· Briefly define the concept of ‘moral panic’?


· Give one example of a moral panic


· How does the news media spread moral panic? (this should form the largest part of your assignment)

A moral panic is a comprehensive fear, frequently a nonsensical one, that a person or thing is a risk to the qualities, wellbeing, and interests of society extensively. Moral panic is generally sustained by the news media, powered by the legislators, and regularly brings about the section of new laws or arrangements, which would objectify the origins of the moral panic. Moral panics are usually revolved around those individuals, who are cornered in the public arena because of their race or ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, nationality and religion. Moral panic is toxic for the society as it can serve many dangerous agendas & divert the attention of the public from the actual problems of the society like corruption, unemployment, discrimination between religion & caste caused by social evils. Thus, moral panics frequently retain stereotypes and re-establish them. Moral panics can enhance the distinctions between people in the society. In terms of moral panic, a person or thing in the society is addressed and characterized as a risk to social standards and the social interests at a large scale. As stated by Goode (2017), the news media and the media persons portray the risks in such oversimplified and emblematic ways that the news of the threats can reach to a greater audience.
