The presentation is outstanding with no errors. Format: (i) a written group document comprising roughly 350 words from each of you (ii) a diagram showing your timeline and roles of each group member (iii) a rough story-board or visual flow chart of the kind of output you intend to produce (iv) a 50 word script from each group member of a possible scenario The timeline and story-board should not take too much time and it is absolutely fine to do it by hand – as long as it is legible! Each group should address the following questions (mentors may choose to refine one or two depending on the essentials of the project). (i) What is the overall problem you are seeking to address? This can include personal motivation etc. · Dignity in the workplace overview - why it’s important · Explain specific problem - patient consent · Evidence that the scenario exists · Explain the consequences of the scenario, how it affects “dignity in the workplace” · Then explain what our aim is: “to empower, give people confidence to speak up etc.” (ii) What is your target audience and why? · Why did we pick healthcare · Why is it important to have dignity in the a healthcare setting · Evidence of current dynamics in healthcare settings? In terms of scoping the assessment, we have collectively decided to choose the healthcare industry to explore the topic of Dignity in the Workplace, primarily due to the very dynamic nature of this workplace. The healthcare industry is bound by a hierarchical structure that comprises doctors, nurses, paramedics, social workers and even patients. The term hierarchy is defined as a system that consists of a set of “integrated levels within which members are ranked both by their disciplines and levels of authority” (Liberatore MJ & Nydick RL, 2008). The fact that there is a hierarchical structure that is embedded in the contextual nature of the healthcare industry, there consequently are a range of potential scenarios that could come to fruition, and hence because of the array of possible workplace dilemmas present, is an ideal industry of choice. It is absolutely fundamental for dignity to be upheld in the healthcare setting, as the fabric of medicine gyrates around conserving care. The care and treatment of patients is the core of medicine and the healthcare industry. Caring for patients cannot genuinely be done without the indispensable pillars of respect and dignity, between the clinical staff and also amongst the patients. When building a Virtual Reality experience to illustrate a potential workplace dilemma in healthcare, we have decided to explore the notion of patient consent in greater detail. Patient consent is a state whereby a healthcare provider educates a patient about the risks, benefits, statistics and even alternatives of a medical intervention (Slim K & Bazin JE, 2019). The patient must be fully competent to make a decision regarding their treatment, and trusts that their decision is held with utmost confidentiality. Patient consent is an ethical and legal obligation of medical practitioners and originates from the autonomy entitled to a patient. Consequently, this VR is intended to educate all levels of the healthcare industry including patients, providing them with a potential dilemma and approach. · Liberatore MJ, Nydick RL. The analytic hierarchy process in medical and health care decision making: a literature review. Eur J Oper Res. 2008;189(1):194-207. · Slim K, Bazin JE. From informed consent to shared decision-making in surgery. J Visc Surg. 2019 Jun;156(3):181-184. (iii) What method / strategy are you taking to address the challenge and why? · What will the scenario be like, what is good about this method · How will we make it engaging and realistic? · Evidence of effectiveness for VR Given the critical nature of the healthcare environment, where workplace dilemmas may compromise patient care, encouraging reflective practice can be an important tool. Reflective practice in the workplace involves reviewing actions and experiences for the purpose of professional development. Reflection has shown to be specifically beneficial in healthcare settings. Studies have shown that reflective practice for nursing students helped develop a sense of responsibility and accountability in their practice, and allowed them to view clinical situations from different angles (REFERENCE). Reflection also increased their confidence in their practice, allowing them to develop professionally, and made them feel more comfortable educating others (REFERENCE). The acquired skills gained from reflective practice may therefore help healthcare workers improve in dealing with workplace dilemmas involving patient consent. However, reflective practice can only occur once the situation has happened, which can have serious moral consequences involving patient consent if a healthcare worker doesn’t respond to these dilemmas appropriately. As these situations don’t have second chances, we aim to address this challenge by creating a platform where healthcare workers can practice these dilemmas. Virtual reality (VR) is capable of creating simulated experiences, and so we plan to use this tool to create realistic scenarios of common workplace dilemmas involving patient consent. (evidence of VR) Individuals will be able to rehearse and reflect on their responses to these dilemmas, while observing from another perspective. This will empower healthcare workers to respond appropriately to dilemmas without compromising their dignity, encouraging a more positive and comfortable workplace environment. (iv) What research will you need to do to formulate the project? · Survey/interview health care workers (scenario) · Collating experiences of health professionals · Barcelona’s study (VR) The research should focus on the example of patient anecdotes, the environment of the workplace, case study that uses Virtual reality in their finding, and how to best adopt interviews into the research. Firstly, collate the patient experience which they were not informed or did not give consent. Under law, consent is more than just providing signature on form but it also includes shared decision-making. This can range from patients who are unable to give consent due to their medical condition or under age patient. According to Avant organisation, an effective consent process should complete all these three factors, capacity, disclosure and voluntariness for a complete consent process. If any of these elements are not fulfilled then the particular patient anecdotes will be considered as part of patient experience needed for this research. Secondly, case studies that apply Virtual Reality as a method should also be examined. For instance, Barcelona's research which corporates Virtual reality to enhance empathy for abused victims. From this research, we can learn to adapt the use of Virtual Reality to improve healthcare workers’ understanding of patient consent. It has to cover how Virtual reality functions and its limitations such as causing the user to experience symptoms like nausea or vertigo. Furthermore, study on interviews and surveys are also crucial. The study should include essential factors which allow us to ask an effective question as well as gaining insight on the limitation and thus how to prevent or minimise it. In addition, the research should include what to look for in response of the interviewees to better evaluate the result and hence provide a more accurate data logging. Next, the research should also explore different lenses that can be used in order to look from a diverse perspective. This means that we will be able to provide access to the various possible reasons as to why the doctors or patients acted that way. Hence, promoting the understanding of not just the patient but the doctor as well. Lastly, the environment of the workplace is needed to provide a realistic setting and includes environment factors such as locations, time and the people involved during the incidents. (v) How would you evaluate the potential impact / efficacy of your project? (for groups with 5 members). · Longitudinal studies comparing the efficacy · User ratings and reviews or interviews [Monitor their tone, gesture, language, reaction (hesitation) , measurement of heart beats, sweaty palm] · Survey after 2 weeks of the VR You need to answer the green highlighted qn (350 words), I have included subquestion/topics to help you to know what to address when writing the answer for the question. You can also see the other questions and see what is needed. 350 words for each question. You can of course include figures etc as needed. You should include references or weblinks as appropriate. You should collate the report as a group report with a cover and take some care with presentation so that it is easy to read. This forms part of your capstone portfolio so make it look professional. Scenarios: Patient consent 1. Doctor with patient under anesthetic -Nada “Okay so... I’ve just finished the urinary examination, but... I think it might be beneficial if you perform a rectal examination while she's still asleep. The tumour is very large and is a good example of tumour progression. Don’t worry you won’t hurt her in any way. 2. Doctor does not disclose all risks to patient which is necessary to make informed consent and assumes that patients understands - Tiffany 3. Surveys can be conducted shortly after completing the project about the users’ personal experiences. Extensive questionnaires related to their experience with the project and using VR could help deduce the effectiveness of it. Questions could assess the emotional significance of the VR, for example, whether it made them feel more confident to respond to dilemmas. Alternatively, questions could assess the experience of VR and whether users thought it was a realistic setting where they could reflect on the situation effectively. Through this we will be able to gain first-hand experience from the users, and use this feedback to reflect and refine.
Additionally, the project will include close observations of the professionals using VR to...
