Assessment Description Question 1: from week one’s content (300 words worth 10 marks) Explain one of the three types of barriers in communication (mechanical noise, semantics or psychological) Analyse some examples of the type of barrier you described and explain what you would do to reduce the impact of this barrier in a communication situation. Question 2: from week two’s content (300 words worth 10 marks) What is assertive communication? Give a general overview. Also, briefly explain the difference between non-assertive, assertive and aggressive behaviours and then explain how developing assertive behaviour could improve your performance in the workplace. Question 3: from week three’s content (300 words worth 10 marks) Explain what is nonverbal communication, select and describe one of the behaviour scopes (chronemics, kinesics, haptics, proxemics or vocalics) and how you could use this behaviour to improve your communication competence. Any hindrance during a communication prevents a message to reach its intended recipient. These hindrances are called barriers of communication. Some of the barriers can be identified li
ke deafness which is a physical barrier but, some of them originate from the brain. We call them psychological barriers. We will talk about some of the properties of psychological barriers below.
Psychological barriers arise when the mental states of sender and receiver act as an obstacle for effective communication. Every individual's mind is unique and the person who is involved in a communication matter as much as the message itself. (Communication, 2018)
Causes of psychological barriers (Businesstopia, 2018) –
Lack of attention – When a person's mind is distracted or preoccupied with other things it leads to the improper formation of the message if he/she is a sender and wrong interpretation if that person is a receiver. Example – A person who has been recently involved in a tragedy might find it difficult to communicate properly.
Poor Retention – This arises from the brain's inability to store all the information it receives. Brain stores only that information which it finds useful resulting in loss of half of the information. At the same time brain also loses old data. Example – Suppose we are given somebody's address today along with their phone number and we forget to write it down. After a month we might not be able to recall all of the messages.
Distrust and Defensiveness – Communication is successful when the attending parties trust each other. Lack of trust sometimes leads to parties deriving a negative interpretation of any message. Example – We generally don't reveal details of our bank account to people we don’t trust.
