Job Description
    In the field of non-invasive medical diagnostics, diagnostic medical sonographers play a crucial role. They apply the imaging procedures on the patients where they take the help of non-ionizing and high frequency ultrasound waves to generate the image of the specific internal body part, organ or tissues. For the most cases, sonographers take a look at the unborn fetus in prenatal care. However, Diagnostic medical sonographers are specialized in imaging of the abdomen, breasts and brain (Brezina, 2018). Their duty consists of preparing a patient before the examination, briefing the examination, carry out the whole procedure and lastly reporting the results to both the doctor and the patient. Whenever the patients need help in positioning, the medical sonographers are summoned for heavy lifting be it before or after the examination.
    Diagnostic medical sonographers are required to optimize patient safety, quality of the diagnosis, comfort of the patient and proper use of the resources (Britton et al., 2019). The target is to achieve the objectives of the examination during the diagnosis. After that, they need to give precise and clear documentation for the accuracy, quality and continuity of healthcare. Moreover, medical sonographers should participate in quality improvement programs to learn more and serve better.
    The code of ethics for this health care occupation includes the promotion of excellence in patient care through accountability and responsibility besides maintaining the integrity of the medical profession. The target of a diagnostic medical sonographer is to improve the patient’s health by giving required information to the patient regarding sonography and also respect their autonomy (Antico et al., 2019). The code of ethics also includes promotion of professional integrity and public trust by being honest and respecting the doctors and the patients.
Education, Registration or Certification
    An associate degree in 2 years or a 4-year bachelor’s degree is needed to become a diagnostic medical sonographer (Russell et al., 2021). However, the 2-years degree is the most common.
