A hate crime is a criminal offense that is motivated in whole or part by hatred, bias, or prejudice against a protected class. A hate crime may be committed against individuals or groups of people who are members of a protected population. Its effects, however, are not limited to victims and other members of their groups but are also felt on micro and macro levels by communities.

For this Major Assessment, you will examine four real-life hate crime cases in order to determine what characteristics make each a hate crime. You will also examine the effects of each hate crime, potential community responses, and how criminal justice organizations can address the impact of hate crimes.

It can be stated that the term hate can be quite misleading because when it is used in a crime then it does not mean anger, rage, or general dislike. Furthermore, in this specific context hate tends to mean bias against individuals or groups with particular characteristics that a law defines. As per the American Psychological Association hate crimes can be defined as a criminal act that is provoked by hate involving one or more than one condition like damage, physical assault, bullying, damage to the property, insults, verbal abuse as well as offensive letters. It is needless to say that the hate crimes can take place when the individuals are targeted based on their religion, skin colour, disability, sexual orientation or even the gender identity. Moreover, the hate crimes do not target those verbally or physically battered but the community that they are in or thought to be a member of on as a whole (Müller & Schwarz, 2021). 
Describing four of the hate crimes (specific factors)
Matthew Shepard- It has been observed that Matthew Shepard’s murder sparked a movement against the new gay hate crime. However, the murder brought the rights of the LGBTQ in light. 
There are specific factors that made this into a hate crime as the attackers murdered Mathew with full of hatred. The hate crimes that is oriented towards the LGBTQ community is not at all new and it did not decrease in the recent times despite of the inclusion of anti-hate crime laws that were introduced. This is genuinely a hate crime and while his story is romanticized for creating a perfect martyr concerning the LGBTQ community the original assumption in terms of his death as an outcome of hate has long lasting effect than the absolute truth. It is believed that the victim died after a vicious anti-gay attack (Gerstenfeld, 2017). One of the major reasons for making it a hate crime as he was severely beaten because of his sexual orientation and was left to die in the year 1998. His death was an evidence of physical danger that is faced by the homosexual in US. The victim was befriended by two men namely Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney who were posing as gay for luring him away from a local bar. Furthermore, because of their hatred towards the gay community they drove him away from a local bar. Furthermore, they drove him to a rural area where they tied him to a fence and brutally beat him up to die in cold.
