You do not need to type anything here. 4 Advancing creativity The lecture states that creativity is a western concept. This dismisses many perspectives. Sometimes, we look to other cultures to inspire creative ideas. This amplifies concepts that are less shared and increases global understanding (cultural appreciation). It can also misuse ideas and artifacts without permission or knowledge sharing (cultural appropriation). Appreciation Give credit to what inspires you. (If appropriate, compensate the content creator.) Have a deep understanding about where ideas come from. Appropriation Use ideas without permission or citation. Not understanding the significance of a cultural item or practice. Three are many other ways to define appreciation and appropriation. This is an introduction to the topic. This page is for your information only. You do not need to type anything here. 5 Part One: topic View the support materials about cultural appropriation and appreciation. Select a topic for your story: Who or what is inspiring you right now? Select a topic that is from a culture that isn’t your own. Such as, I’m a white female who loves the first-generation American, Detroit-based brand Diop. They have a mission to support the appreciation of West African culture. What topic did you select? The topic I selected is: Why constraints? We’re using the “three nouns” prompt to give us constraints. These boundaries give our brains comfortable space to wander. Why does this work? Take this example … There was a playground in the middle of four busy streets in New York City. Traffic was everywhere. Children only played in the center of the park. Then, city planners built a fence surrounding the entire park. Everyone used the entire park because they weren’t afraid of traffic anymore. Creating with constraints is just like building a fence around the playground of your mind. A few, strategic boundaries give all of us a safe place to play. Write the topic you selected. 6 Part One: “Three Nouns” writing prompt Go to the website: “Take Three Nouns Writing Prompt.” Once you’re at the website, click the button “generate three nouns.” Click the button as many times as you want. Find three words that are a good fit for you. What are your three words? (List your words on your homework assignment.) Word one: Word two: Word three: You’ll use these words in a moment. Continue to the directions on the next slide … Visit the “Writing Prompt” website. Write your three words on the slide. 7 Part One: Story Write a story Use the three words from the “Take Three Nouns Writing Prompt” to write a 5-10 sentence story (fiction or non-fiction). Use the three words from the “take three nouns writing prompt.” Write a story about your topic. How does your topic add to the history of creativity? For example, I might write a story about the FX series “Reservation Dogs” on Hulu. I’d write about how it’s cultural appreciation and is making creativity more inclusive. Or I’d write about Diop! Write your story here. Write a story. 8 Part two: Draw Draw an illustration for your "three nouns" story. Spend less than 5 minutes drawing. The goal is to communicates an idea. You do not need to make a masterpiece! For example, you could use the “continuous line portrait” technique. Use any materials you have, including a writing utensil and paper. Make sure you take a photo of it! You can draw in PowerPoint. You could also use the apps "Paper by WeTransfer" (Apple only) or "Bamboo paper" (all devices). Upload your drawing to this slide. Write a minimum of 20 words describing your drawing. Think about how you might write a caption for a photo on a news site. Or write how you might explain it to someone with limited eyesight. Write the description of your drawing here. Draw a picture. Add your picture. Write a description of your picture. 9 Part three: Reflect Select multiple intelligences to inspire your reflection Review Gardner's multiple intelligences. (These are linked in your support materials on D2L under the topic “introduction and lecture.”) What multiple intelligences best represent your area of expertise? Write your selection here (select 1-2 multiple intelligences): Write at least one multiple intelligence on this slide. 10 Part three: reflection (Page 1) Respond to the prompts. Write a minimum of 300 words total for your reflection. (To clarify … you could write a 100-word response to each question.) Prompts Quote or summarize at least one support material in your reflection. What do your multiple intelligences or topic say about where you’re from, how you grew up or the way you live your life? How are or aren’t’ your multiple intelligences represented in your selected topic? How does this assignment (and/or activities this week) add to your understanding of creativity and creative thinking? Write your reflection here. (Use the next slide if you need more space.) Respond to the questions. Write a minimum of 200 words. (Just to clarify … you could write a 50-word response to each question.) 11 Part three: reflection (Page 2) Write your reflection here. (Duplicate this slide if you need more space.) Respond to the questions. Write a minimum of 200 words. (Just to clarify … you could write a 50-word response to each question.) 12 Submit Upload your work to D2L What should the format be? Upload your document as a PDF or hyperlink. Story
It was 2 AM and the girl felt an inner voice screaming “You don't need anything from this life”. So much goes on all the time in my head but finding a space to confide in is difficult. I don't want anything from this life, the girl sighed. The 18-year-old girl has always been different within the crowd. She was rather always away from the crowd. It was a difficult childhood for her. As she grew, difficulties and anxiety crippled up. The way she thought was different from that of society. The battle between the real and fake seemed to be an everlasting truth. Reality has always been harsh. But it becomes difficult and even harder for some people. Losing parents at an early age, being sexually abused, and being constantly bullied and isolated is enough to cripple down a person. But it is obvious to battle for...
