Discussion 7.1: Determinants of Health Round Robin
Hello everyone,
The health disparity that caught my attention was the "Infant breastfeeding practices among mother" Analyzing the different social determinants of health all can be applied however for the population we are addressing I believe a major SDOH is economic. Minorities tend to be in the low income group and it can be possible that some of these mothers have jobs that are low waged, are sole providers, or self employed. Due to these factors, many mothers may feel that they have no choice but to get back to work almost immediately after having their baby. This can cause a delay or interruption in breastfeeding. When assessing at risk mothers during prenatal visits her care team can connect her with social services where she can be guided to the various assistance programs available such as WIC, TANF, or energy assistance programs. By doing so, the mother should have the economic support to feel comfortable enough not to immediately return to work and focus on breastfeeding her newborn. What do you all think?
