Fundamentals of Computer Systems Final Assessment – Research Task: Question 1: Networking (15 marks) A small college has an office and two classrooms. In the office there is a router/switch connected to the Internet, a computer that acts as a file server for all the other computers and another computer that is used by the college principal. In each classroom there is a computer for the teacher with an interactive screen. Each computer is connected to the router/switch using Cat5 ethernet cables. This is shown in figure 1. Next year the college is expanding so they will have the office, 5 classrooms and a teachers’ staffroom with 4 computers. They would also like students to be able to connect their laptops to the file server and Internet while they are in the classrooms or in the student breakout area as shown below This is shown in figure 2. (a) Describe in your own words each of the following network topologies · Bus topology · Mesh topology · Ring topology · Star topology · Tree topology[3] (b) State which topology the college is using before expanding and give a reason for your answer. Describe in your own words each of the following network topologies
Bus topology:
Bus topology is connected via single back
bone wire, all devices are connected through single LAN
cable. If the backbone is broken, the whole Network fails. Bus topologies are comparatively simple
to establish and do not involve much wiring compared to the alternatives.

Mesh topology:
A tree topology is a distinct type of arrangement in which many connected components are
organized like the branches of a tree. Tree topologies are commonly used to establish the computers
in a company network.

Ring topology:
In ring topology every device has precisely two neighbours for transmission purposes. In which If the
link gets fail or LAN gets fails then topology fails. Another disadvantage of the ring is that if any
machine is added to or eliminated from the network, the ring is broken-down and the network fails.

Star topology:
In star topology all nodes are separately linked to a central link point, like a hub or a switch and router.
A star takes extra cable than a bus, but the advantage is that if a cable collapses, only one node will
be down.

tree topology is a distinct type of array, representing a Baum branch of many related components. A
tree topology is commonly used to manage computers on a corporate network.
