EDITION(REQUIREMENT)

TASK-Regional Gardens Ltd is a company that runs a number of related gardening enterprises. It has a large display garden that it opens for public inspection a number of times a year. These enterprises include the Regional Gardens Nursery which sells plants and garden supplies to the public, and Regional Garden Planners which provides garden advice, design and consultancy services.

Regional Gardens has engaged you as a consultant to advise them on the use of Cloud Computing in their daily operations and they have asked you to prepare a report for their Board that looks at the following aspects of the proposal:

1. The first step of the board’s plan is to move the Regional Gardens website and associated web services into the cloud. However, they want some further information on:

1. Whether an IaaS or a PaaS model would be more appropriate for their web services and the advantages and disadvantages of each model in this case (15 marks).

2. The board also want their web services architecture to be more resilient than in the past, and they want you to recommend an architecture to achieve resiliency (15 marks).

2. In keeping with the their new security policy, the Board want to keep all client and transaction data in the Bathurst Data Centre and not in the cloud. This means that clients accessing the Regional Gardens web site and web services will need to have any data that they upload stored in the Bathurst Data Centre.

1. Describe to the Board how you would arrange to have client data that is uploaded to the Regional Gardens web site and services stored in the Bathurst Data Centre. (15 marks)

2. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of this approach. (15 marks)

3. Regional Gardens want to ensure that all their staff have the ability to access office automation, such as email, word processing and spreadsheet capabilities, as well as online storage for their files, whether they are in the office, at home, or deployed on a customer’s site in the field. The Regional Gardens board is very concerned to learn about the critical issues, other than cost, that may affect the supply of Cloud based office automation to their staff. You will need to prepare a report on the best way to provide office automation for Regional Gardens. Your report should:

1. Provide Regional Gardens withTWOdifferent approaches to providing office automation to their staff; (10 marks)

2. Outline the major benefits and issues with each approach; (5 marks)

3. Provide a summary of your advice to this company along with your recommendation about which option to choose. (5 marks)

4. The garden design unit uses the DynaScape software suite, which is installed locally on their laptops, to design gardens and landscapes for their clients. The design staff often spend long periods at a clients property while collecting data and designing. The Board are uncertain if they should retain local installations of this software or subscribe to the SaaS version of DynaScape. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. (20 marks)

1.1. IaaS cloud service is recommended for the Regional Gardens Ltd. It will offer the basic infrastructure for computing like storage, servers, networking resources. This service hosts website and can help in analyzing data collected over the cloud for the target company related to services offered like consultancy, advice on garden and designing (Bhardwaj, 2010). The target company can give up
control over cloud security to the cloud provider who would be solely responsible for data security of the company.
Advantages of IaaS
· The company need not set up or maintain the core stack
· Hardware is provided by the service provided. Company does not need to purchase it or pay during downtime.
· Cost effective solution for cloud computing since the company pays for what it uses.
· Easy to use since hardware deployment is done by the service provider. Management activities are virtualized and employees can use their time in other operations.
Disadvantages of IaaS
· It is a multitenant architecture leading to data security concerns.
· Company may be unable to access its own data during provider’s downtime.
· The team requires training to get familiar with the new system.
Advantages of PaaS
· Company does not have to care for maintenance, upgrade or replacement of the system software. The time saved can be used for other business operations.
· Company can implement and test new application. Quick deployment of those applications will lead to improved success.
· Dynamic scaling is offered in PaaS. The service provider can scale or descale according to the demand and the company gets to pay for only what it uses. The company is not responsible for slow connections due to network issues.
Disadvantages of PaaS
· The business will be dependent on the PaaS service provider’s functional capability, reliability and speed. Company should maintain its iwn data backup to deal with unforeseen situations.
· Company may face compatibility issues with the new system integrating into its own legacy system.
· The basic resources are shared among multiple companies making sensitive data prone to attacks.
1.2. Service oriented architecture is recommended for the target company to improve resilience. It shall include three roles
· Service Provider-creates and provides the web service to the client application. It first publishes its access information to service registry. Provider is responsible for deciding the services to be exposed, deciding security, availability and service cost. It further decides the partner agreements for service use.
· Service Requestor-The client application that contacts the web service. It locates the entries in broker registry and invokes web service.
· Service Broker- Application that provides access to UDDI. It is responsible for making available the required information to the requester regarding web service interface and implementation.
A well architected system in terms of resilience has following characteristics:
· It is adaptable to changing conditions
· It can autonomously recover from failures
· It is capable of predicting failures and define responses.
Various aspects of resilience include regional autonomy, redundancy and insights. Insights include ability of providing data required for automated decision making. Redundancy include capability of service to enable differing levels of redundancy into reliable storage. Regional autonomy keeps the systems independent of regions. The following diagram of web service architecture is appropriate for the target company to incorporate resilience.

2.1. The data from the website can be stored at the Bathurst Data Center using network servers and data servers. Data received at the Regional Garden’s website is broken into packets to be transmitted. These packets are sent to special computers called routers. Routers send these packets to the internet service provider through wireless and wired networks after selecting the best path for...
