Applying Today's Ethical Principles to Classic Psychology Experiments

Part I:
Choose one of the following original peer-reviewed articles on classic psychology experiments:

Clark & Hatfield 1989 - Receptivity of Casual Sex Offers.pdf

Preview the document

Haney, Banks, & Zimbardo - Stanford Prison Exp.pdf

Preview the document

Milgram 1963 - Obedience to Authority.pdf

Preview the document

Part II:
Read the article you chose while keeping in mind the ethical guidelines you read about in your text. You also can refer to the lecture slides, which are in the "files" as well as located in this module (the research ethics module).

Part III:
Read over the Belmont Report and the Husson University Research Participant Rights Document, as well as general APA guidelines noted in the lecture and textbook.

Using those documents, discuss ethical procedures and violations you uncovered in accordance with the standards outlined in the
APA ethics guidelines, AND the Husson University Research Participants Rights document.

    • Specifically comment on the degree to which the experiment you read about meets or fails to meet ethical standards and procedures and how it does so(don't just state your opinion on it (e.g., it was unethical, I did not like it). Instead, make specific references to those guidelines/criteria, etc.). Keep in mind there might be some overlap between the different guidelines/criteria and that is fine.

    • Take note of each of the guidelines/standards, highlight any discrepancies or ethical issues, and discuss how and why the study practices would be considered unethical. Also, explain what you think about the ethics of the study - do you think the study should have been conducted? Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Explain your thinking.

      • While I value your opinion/reaction, be sure not to just state your opinion throughout - use the Belmont Report, textbook, and Husson Research Participant Rights, and what you've learned so far about ethics (i.e., concepts and principles) to back up the points you make in your assignment.

    • The assignment should be at a minimum length of around600 words - that is, you will probably need at least 600 words to respond to the different aspects of the assignment clearly and completely.

Abstract
Ethical standards and procedures are very important for all the experiments. The researcher has to apply the ethical standards for ensuring the quality outcome. If the researchers are following unethical practices it directly affects the end-users of the experiment and it also creates different problems to the people. In this research paper, we are critically analysing the article titled “Gender Differences in Receptivity to Sexual Offers” in a detailed way. We are focusing on the degree to which the experiment explained in the article meets or fails to meet ethical standards and procedures.
While analysing the article we can understand that the researchers are trying to find out how the threat of AIDS is affecting men and women who are in engage in casual sexual relations. The researchers stated that men are eager for sexual activity, but while analysing different parts of the experiment and especially the results presented in the article we can understand that they are not sure about why the men are more interested in sexual activities (Clark et al 1989). One of the key ethical principles that are related to the psychology experiment’s is truth-telling and truthfulness. While analysing the psychology experiment conducted by the researchers we can understand that they failed to meet the ethical principles of truth-telling and...
