ASSESSMENT 2 - CLINICAL CASE SCENARIO
General Use of Digital Health Technology
The general use of digital health technology is to integrate the information technology with the medical practices to keep appropriate records about the patients. It stores the patient’s medical history, the diagnosis of diseases, reports, treatment plans, any allergies and dates of immunisation, laboratory test reports as well as radiological images for future use when the patient is admitted to the hospital.
However, according to Shah and Khan (2020), there are both benefits and limitations in the process of tracking the records using the digital health technologies. The benefits include the time management in the production of emergency treatment to the patient who are treated by the medical emergency team. All the information can be obtained in a click, which saves time in the application of the treatment.
The limitation is the concern about the privacy of the health data of the patient, which can be accessed for any unethical means. According to the registered nursing standards, the nurses must maintain the ethics to provide the safety and security to the patient through their practice (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2021). The digital health technology has covered the area of health apps for fixing appointments, reviewing the reports, uploading the prescriptions and keeping several other health records.
As supported by Tilahun et al. (2021), the general use of the digital health technology is highly addressed during the COVID pandemic when the patients were advised to maintain isolation at their respective home and consult the doctor through health apps in case of emergencies. Such usefulness of the technology has helped the population to fight the pandemic situation and opt for the correct treatment during the crisis.
The incorporation of the technology through such general use can increase the affectivity of the evidence-based practice in the clinical manifestation of the nurses. The evidence-based practices increase a positive outcome of the patient regarding the treatment applied, which requires the nurses to be properly trained for using these health applications. Once proper training is obtained, the evidence-based practices can be inculcated with the use of the technology and used for the treatment of patient.
As suggested by Walsh et al. (2017), the myHealth app has been a revolutionary approach to the Australian Health System in maintaining the electronic health and medical records. The data can be accessed by the medical health professionals for incorporating a successful treatment plan according to the health condition of the patient. These considerations provide a positive health outcome and reduce the hospital stay by reducing the time of treatment application to the patient.
The primary details like age, gender, past medical history, ethnicity and medical bill details are all included in the digital record of health apps. One can book appointments and cancel if inconvenient or schedule an online visit to the doctor through such digital technology when time is limited for the offline visit. It uses the computing platform to increase the access to patients’ details for the general well-being of the patient and reduces the cost required for the treatment process.
Legal and Ethical Requirements
There are several ethical and legal requirements to access the patient’s health record through the electronic medium. Sharing such information without the knowledge of the patient can create both ethical and legal issues when a lawsuit is filed against it. As supported by Vehko at al. (2019), the electronic records of the patients must be accessed in an ethical way to avoid the unavoidable issues related to it. The registered nurses must maintain the confidentiality of the documents and the information gathered through it.
The data inaccuracies must be minimised and the information system must be upgraded to avoid any kind of hacking. The legal issues may arise when the patient is provided with several medicines or transfusions without their proper consent, just by accessing the electronic health records. As suggested by Nebeker et al. (2020), the ethical and legal requirements must be maintained by a legal expert hired in the clinics to maintain the online records of the patients and providing access to them.
There is a high chance of data breaches if the records are not maintained properly by the nurses. For example,...
