Assessment description
For this assessment, you are tasked with creating a poster and providing a five (5) minute recorded narration around a chosen mental disorder and its connection to a chosen social stressor and/or ethical issue. In your presentation, you will explain the key concepts, research findings, and connections between the elements outlined below.
This assessment will provide evidence of your abilities against the following unit learning outcomes:
- ULO 1. Describe the political, biopsychosocial, historical, and cultural factors that contribute to people's mental health, and explain how thesefactors influence people's experience of stigma, equity, and healthcare access in Australia;
ULO 2. Discuss therapeutic communication, use of self and working in partnership with cultural safety as critical concepts in mental health
nursing care;
ULO 5. Evaluate contemporary models of mental health care for wellness across the lifespan; and
ULO 6. Identify and apply relevant ethical and legal frameworks for the safe nursing care of people experiencing challenges to their mental
health.

2. Choose a social and/or ethical issue.(See examples from the list below).
- Poverty and financial hardship
- Bullying and harassment
- Employment and job insecurity
- Climate change and natural disasters
- Media portrayal of mental health
- Social media use and its effects on mental health
- Cultural pressures and expectations
- Informed consent in psychological treatment or research
- The ethics of involuntary treatment and hospitalization
- The impact of mental health diagnoses on civil rights (e.g., forced treatment, exclusion from certain jobs)
- Stigma and discrimination
- Capacity and consent
- Restrictive mental health care practices
3. Develop a five (5) minute presentation using a single Powerpoint slide (poster) with recorded narration.
Your presentation should address the following points:
- Overview of the chosen mental disorder (e.g., onset, symptoms, course, and prevalence)
- Critical discussion explores the social stressor and/or ethical issue chosen and its potential impact on the person experiencing the mental disorder, including,
- emotional, psychological and social impacts, and
- equity and access to healthcare
- Recommend contemporary evidence based interventions/approaches to support the well being and recovery of a person experiencing the mental disorder and social stressor or ethical issue that you have described.
- Appropriate ethical and legal considerations related to mental health care practice are evident in the presentation content
- Your powerpoint poster should include relevant images, diagrams, and infographics to highlight key points (e.g., statistics, mental health graphs, flowcharts, or illustrations). Please submit the following to Canvas by the due date:
- Poster presentation (single powerpoint slide) with recorded narration
- Transcript of your narration with your reference list (APA 7th formatting)
Note:
- Students' names are not to be included on any assessment tasks/submissions. Only student ID numbers should be included (as per theAssessment PolicyandAssessment Procedures)
- Please note that your submission will be reviewed by the University’s plagiarism-checking software and, with reasonable grounds, be subject to further inquiry through the Office of the Associate Dean of Education
Extensions and Late Submissions
Please refer to the Unit Outline and the University of Canberra and Assessment procedures forinformation regarding extensions, late submissions, and assessment requirements.
Late submission of assignments without an approved extension will result in a penalty of 10% of the maximum available marks for the assessment item per day, up to and including three (3) calendar days. After 3 days, a zero (0) mark will be awarded (per UC assessment policy).

Students must submit original work, that has not been previously submitted for assessment at the University of Canberra. Self-plagiarism is grounds for referral for academic misconduct.
