In the first part of the assignment you will be required to look at the different operating system services for activities such as process control, threading, memory management and device access etc. In part 2, you are required to evaluate different operating systems and identify any security risks associated with them and investigate the ways to manage these with a range of supporting technologies Completion of this assignment will address the following learning outcomes: 3 Describe and make productive use of operating system services for activities such as process control, threading, memory management and device access. 4 Evaluate operating systems and identify related security risks and ways to manage these with a range of supporting technologies. mailto:[email protected] Task: You are expected to produce a 1500 word report on various operating system services and features and your evaluation of different operating systems on security risks and vulnerabilities associated with them. Your report should include the ways to manage these risks, supporting technologies for the management of risks and relevant management strategies. You are advise to include operating systems such as Linux, Windows and Windows Server etc. Part 1: Describe and include evidences of making productive use of operating system services such as: • Input and output. • Pipes and filters. • Access control. • Process concepts, process management (starting and stopping), threads and threading models, concurrency and parallel processing. • Scheduling. • Memory management including stack, heap, shared memory, virtual memory, addressing, paging, swapping, buffers, ringbuffer. Part 2: Evaluate different operating systems and identify related security risks and vulnerabilities and ways to manage these risks and vulnerabilities with a range of supporting technologies and management strategies. Your investigation is expected to cover the following areas. • Security risks, security management strategies and options evaluation. • Malicious software • Buffer overflow • Access control • Security maintenance Further Details & Guidance Written assignment structure: 1. Cover page (CU template will be provided). 2. Table of contents. Part 1 The 1500 word report should contain the following sections: 3. Title and summary/ abstract: This should be a very brief overview of your project. About 10% of the word count. 4. Introduction: Background information/ review. About 10% of the word count. 5. The main body of your work. This should include information about AVs, the state of the art for AVs, and any other information you researched, well ordered and presented. About 50% of the word count. 6. Discussions/ proposals: This should include your proposed actions, which are the result of the practical task. About 20% of the word count. 7. Conclusion and recommendations: This should recap your work. About 10% of the word count. 8. List of references: A minimum of eight references from credible sources (list of references is not included in the word count). Do not forget to reference all your sources using CU Harvard, and to include numbered and captioned images in your report. Remember that part of your mark will be for presentation (style, text organisation, referencing, captioning images, correct use of images, tables and appendices etc.).
