Value: 25%
Due Date: 24-May-2020
Return Date: 16-Jun-2020
Length: 2000 words
Submission method options: Alternative submission method

TASK
This assessment has two tasks as described below.

Task 1 (8%): Argument Visualisation

In task 1 you will create a simple argument visualisation using the MindMup software and you will produce a report in task 2 which details the argument you construct in your argument visualisation.

Choose ONE of the following media articles or case studies:

1. The Ethics of “Giving People a Voice” and Political Advertising on Facebook (https://www.scu.edu/ethics-spotlight/social-media-and-democracy/the-ethics-of-giving- people-a-voice-and-political-advertising-on-facebook/)

2. The federal government’s response to the ACCC’s Digital Platforms Inquiry is a let down (https://theconversation.com/the-federal-governments-response-to-the-acccs-digital- platforms-inquiry-is-a-let-down-128775)

3. Countries Debate Openness of Future National IDs (https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/ computing/it/countries-debate-openness-of-future-national-ids) (https://spectrum.ieee.org/ robotics/medical-robots/would-you-trust-a-robot-surgeon-to-operate-on-you)

4. Weaponization of Social Media by Authoritarian States (https://www.scu.edu/ethics- spotlight/social-media-and-democracy/weaponization-of-social-media-by-authoritarian- states/)

5. Do We Want Robot Warriors to Decide Who Lives or Dies? (https://spectrum.ieee.org/ robotics/military-robots/do-we-want-robot-warriors-to-decide-who-lives-or-dies) (http://mediasmarts.ca/blog/what-do-you-meme-it%E2%80%99s-not-legal)

Now follow the instructions given below to complete the assessment task:

  • Use the title of the article/case study as the title of your argument visualisation so that the lecturer knows which article you are analysing.

  • Undertake further research about your chosen case and the ethical issue involved, to assist you in analysing it in your argument visualisation (and in your report in Task 2).

  • Identify some logical arguments and construct an argument visualisation using MindMup software. Your visualisation should contain the conclusion, and all of the

reasons and objections leading to that conclusion.

  • Your argument visualisation should present a logical argument for your subsequent report in Task 2. Your report will develop these arguments based on a deeper analysis of the ethical issue(s).

  • Your report should contain all of the arguments contained in your visualisation, and you should not introduce new arguments in your report that are not in your visualisation.

  • When you have completed your visualisation, download it as a .pdf file and submit via Turnitin.

N.B. You are not required to provide references in your visualisation, however your subsequent report in Task 2 should be fully referenced.

  • Write a report based on your argument visualisation created in Task 1 and the media

article or case study you selected in Task 1.

  • Undertake further research about your chosen case and the ethical issue involved, to assist you in analysing and discussing it in your report.

  • Analyse the ethical issue applying the classical ethical theories, including utilitarianism, deontology, contract, and virtue. Your report should present well- reasoned arguments, logically leading to appropriate recommendations.

  • You should not introduce new arguments in your report that were not contained in your argument visualisation, and your report should contain all of the arguments contained in your visualisation.

  • Write an overall conclusion that justifies your recommendations made in your report.

  • Include a Reference list at the end of your work, using the correct APA referencing style, corresponding to in-text citations. The word limit for the report is 1500 words +/-10%. Headings, citations, references and appendices do not count towards the word limit, but quotations do.

This assessment extends the skills practiced in Assessment items 1 and 2, to help you to achieve majority of the learning objectives of this subject.

In addition to identifying a contentious situation in ICT and dissecting the argument(s) about it, you must also now demonstrate the ability to evaluate the elements of the argument by applying classical ethical theories, where appropriate.

Since Assessment item 1 and 2, your knowledge will have grown, and you will now realise that almost all ICT ethical dilemmas can be classified under one of the main ICT ethical issues that are discussed in this subject; for instance, surveillance is a sub-issue of privacy, harmful software is a sub-issue of ICT professionalism, and piracy is a sub-issue of intellectual property.

In ICT, the main ethical issues are taken to be:

  • Community and identity

  • Pervasive and convergent computing.

The assessment item is designed to help you to build skills towards achieving the learning objectives, by requiring you to:

  • identify an ICT-related ethical issue from a media article or case study;

  • apply classical ethical theory to the analysis of an ethically dilemma to determine the

rightness or wrongness of actions/decisions made therein;

  • derive logical and justifiable conclusions to resolve the ethical issue(s);and,

Argument Visualisation using MindMup software for the topic “The Ethics of “Giving People a Voice” and Political Advertisement on Facebook.
Task 1
Task 2
Introduction
This report aims to create an argument visualization using Mindmup software and then use it to expand on the different reasons and objections inside the argument visualization and expand on it using the ethica
l theories and also dive into the various ethical issues that are encountered as it relates to the use of Facebook in giving people the voice and using the Facebook platform to conduct political advertisement. This is especially highlighted when people can voice their views, and political parties can utilize this avenue to do their campaigning and advertisement and send targeted messages to select groups. The benefits and advantages do come with risks that cannot be overlooked. Users are risking their information getting into the hands of strangers based upon security and privacy breaches.
Utilitarianism
Facebook has an extensive reach, and according to website Statista, there are close to 2.6 billion monthly active users as of the first quarter of 2020. Facebook is also the largest social media platform. The better connectedness and ubiquitous nature of the platform make it a great tool for spreading messages and enhancing communication for its users. It is this benefit that has attracted millions of users towards Facebook. The entire population benefits due to this massive network where anyone can connect with anyone at any point in time. Also, the right messages can reach the right audience through targeted marketing campaigns. Getting to know the various opinions and views of other users helps in formulating a general opinion for individuals. This is especially true when people would like to voice out their dislikes or likes towards certain political candidates and take it into the public domain. Everyone benefits from such communications. (Amer, 2019).
Another significant advantage of using the platform is the benefit of the huge market research that Facebook can do to target the right demographic for political advertisements. This kind of information is not something which one can get quickly. The ability to use analytics and make data-driven decisions is also part of the benefits. (Rodger and Blackshaw., 2017, page 556).
Issues: There are, however, specific issues related to clashes/conflicts that can happen due to such views being held and promoted vehemently by users. Sometimes such issues get out of hand because users resort to abuses and bad words and try to disrespect individuals with particular views that are different than theirs. The better connectedness and ubiquitous nature of the platform make it a great tool for spreading messages and enhancing communication for its users. Getting to know the various opinions and views of other users helps in formulating a general opinion for individuals.
Another issue is due to the largeness of the platform and the ability of individuals to post almost anything, it is challenging to censor unacceptable content like hate speech and news, which are not real. Such fake news can move and influence individuals to act and behave a certain way, irrespective of its authenticity. This is a huge issue, especially during the election days since news can gain momentum very fast by the users’ likes and comments. (Garner, 2017).
Deontology Theory
