Association between mental health and expenditure
Introduction
Mental health forms one of the greatest burdens on a country, especia
lly because many mental issues are avoidable (Amaddeo, Barbui, Perini, Biggeri, & Tansella, 2007). It not only negatively impacts an economy through expenditure, but also reduces the workforce and the number of dependant individuals in the economy. While expenditure on other health sectors remain high, increase in expenditure on mental health is a national issue today (Sharac, Mccrone, Clement, & Thornicroft, 2010). However, as many mental health issues are treatable and manageable, it is important to understand that spending on mental health can improve life outcomes for individuals drastically (Amaddeo, Barbui, Perini, Biggeri, & Tansella, 2007).
Proposition
The increasing expenses on provision of mental health is a growing problem. However, it is not an isolated problem. It may be argued, that better mental health outcomes may not be associated with more expenditure but better organization. However, research shows that higher expenditure on healthcare shows better health outcomes (Vavken, Pagenstert, Grimm, & Dorotka, 2012). While management can make better use of available resources, what is eventually needed is money so that more comfort and help can be offered to mental health patients....
