In this assessment task you will reflect on the Catholic social thought principles with reference to or

consideration of your course of study to explain the interrelatedness of self and community.

You will do this using the format of stand-alone, medium-length paragraphs that respond to four

statements below (300 words for each of the four statements):

The CST principle of human dignity balances the importance of the individual person with the importance of community, as the doctrine of human dignity in Catholic social teaching is based on the realisation that an individual is created in God's image. Nobo
dy can completely eliminate an individual's inherent human dignity. Human dignity is freely given to every individual, whether a saint or a sinner, incarcerated or freed, influential or disadvantaged (Pesut et al., 2019). Moreover, the CST principle of the common good balances the importance of the individual person with the importance of the community, as the common good is achieved when humans collaborate to enhance the well-being of individuals living in the community and around the world. Individual rights to community resources and individual possessions must be balanced with the demands of the underprivileged and downtrodden (Hovey & Phillips, 2015).
The shared humanity necessitates that humans recognise and enforce the dignity of each individual human. This dignity underpins all of the other obligations and rights. This doctrine is regarded as the cornerstone of the CST. The concept of the worth of all people's lives is shared by Human Rights laws, which are also ubiquitous, inalienable, and inviolable. Since everyone is made in the likeness and image of God, they all have a supreme dignity that cannot be ripped away, even though it isn't invariably respected (O’brien & Shannon, 2016). Objects are never more significant than individuals. People should never be regarded as a tool or even a means to an end. Human rights are founded on human dignity. Everyone has the same rights and dignity. Similarly, every human culture, community, and race has equal rights and dignity. Since every individual is a child of the same God, the human family is just one. This facet of human dignity is often referred to as the basis of the unity of the human family (Mulhall, 2022).

CST facilitates the dignity of all humans, as all are created in the power of the Holy Spirit. However, this dignity must always be viewed in relation to the advancement of the common good. Since all human beings share a common dignity, they are required to live in unity with one another (Pesut et al., 2019). This solidarity allows humans to recognise that human burgeoning is only possible through collaboration with each other. The common good is served by these collaborative efforts. The common good, as a fundamental principle, is inextricably linked to human dignity as well as results in solidarity. Individual rights must be respected with regard to promoting the common good since humans are social beings (Hovey & Phillips, 2015).
