Assessment Task and Context Assessment Task and Context We live in a dynamic world, which consists of various complex adaptive systems and requires today’s managers to take a holistic view of the business. In order to gain a holistic understanding, managers need to understand all the key internal and external stakeholders and the intended and unintended consequences of their decisions. To achieve this objective, managers need to learn and apply systems thinking tools and techniques. One such tool is “Rich Picture”. Rich Picture helps us express our own understanding of the world, the stakeholders to be considered and the impact that they may have our actions. Tools such as Rich Picture, CATWOE and Root Definition Reports, help us to understand others’ perspectives without getting involved in conflicting arguments of convincing one another about their own worldview. Instructions *** This assessment is linked to Assessment 1 (Part A). To successfully complete MGT603 Assessment 2, students will require to write a comprehensive report that helps resolve the problem that they have introduced in Assessment 1 (Part A) for their selected case organisation. Using the resulting discussion from Assessment 1 (Part A), students are required to analyse and synthesise consequences of the selected case organisation’s issue/problem/challenge on various internal and external stakeholders involved while achieving the goals and objectives through policy implementation. There are two (2) important discussions to Assessment 2. 1. Rich Picture: Students are required to create/draw a Rich Picture of the identified problem/challenge/issue in MGT603 Assessment 1 (Part A). The Rich Picture can be hand drawn and should provide a concise overview of the complex system under review. 2. Root Definition Report Using CATWOE: A “Root Definition Report” is a “structured analysis and description of the system being investigated”. A Root Definition Report explains, “what”, “how” and “why”. A CATOWE analysis can help in the development of a thorough Root Definition Report. CATWOE is a mnemonic that identifies all stakeholders in the system being analysed. To successfully completeAssessment 2 report, it must include: Rich Picture Root Definition Report Using CATWOE And based on these tools (Rich Picture and Root Definition Report Using CATWOE), students will recommend two (2) optimal solutions to overcome the problem/issue/challenge identified in Assessment 1 (Part A). MGT603 Assessment 2 Submission Instructions: The Rich Picture and Root Definition Report using CATWOE needs to be produced according to academic writing guidelines and must be submitted in compliance with the following: The submission must be in WORD document format and must contain a “signed” assessment cover sheet. You should make significant references to the subject material and substantial wider reading. A minimum of six (6) academic-related (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles, books chapters, university resources, conference papers) and a minimum of two (2) other references (e.g. newspaper articles, industry reports, and etc.) are required in this assessment. References to ‘Wikipedia’ or similar unsubstantiated sources will not be accepted. It is highly advised to use recent references (from the past five years) where possible and necessary. Background Information About The Company: The company that was chosen to complete this assignment is Officeworks. Officeworks is one of the largest organizations in Australia, which was established in 1994 by Coles Myer. He sold the company to Wesfarmers group in 2007 for around A$16 billion. Now the company employs around 8000 members with 167 stores available all around Australia and New Zealand, Ling, W. (n.d.). They sell around 40,000 products for all business sectors and schools. Like all the organizations, Officeworks was also affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. Discussion: According to (Corporate Finance Institute, 2021), systems thinking is a strategy that connects all the departments in the organization to work together effectively. Soft system methodology helps to draw the issues in the organization and problems faced by stakeholders. So Peter Checkland [1999] and Brian Wilson [2001] developed a few tools to solve the issues (“An Overview of the Soft Systems Methodology,” 2015). In a recent interview, Sarah Hunter Managing Director of Officeworks (PricewaterhouseCoopers, n.d.) mentioned that in the quick session people started panic buying which created a supply-demand in IT hardware, Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and home office setup items in the shops in Victoria and NSW. Immediately, they started to order more items to keep in stock in the warehouse to avoid the demand. Moreover, before the pandemic, most of the corporate staff need to be present in the office to complete the tasks but during the pandemic, they did work from home to run the business without any disruption. 3. Rich picture: With the help of a rich picture diagram. I have understood the issues that occurred during the pandemic in the organization. Catwoe Analysis: The tool helps to understand the business decisions and strategies to run it successfully in the world. Mainly, this tool is used to identify the issues and opportunities in the business. The below table shows the information about Officeworks. Customers The main stakeholders for Officeworks are 1. Small and medium organizations in Australia. 2. Students and Professionals Actors Wesfarmers family group and Sara hunter are the important persons in the organisation to take decisions to improve the sales and stay in the market. World view They are supplying all the IT hardware and providing greener choices to the customers Owners Wesfarmers family group and there are 12 board of members who take all the necessary actions to stay in the market and ahead of their competitors. Environment The main motto of this organization is to purchase sustainable products and recycle electronic goods properly to eliminate waste. Conclusion: To sum up, a recent survey which was conducted by (The Sydney Morning Herald, 2020) found that most of the Officeworks corporate office employees wish to continue the work home option, which helps them spend time with the family and work-life balance is maintained. During the pandemic to fill up the stocks and cope with the demand, they have employed additional people in the organization. Most of the industries faced a huge loss during COVID-19, however officeworks is seen to have made a huge profit with the strategies that were employed. 6.
