Assessment Two – Critical AnalysisAssessment typeCritical analysis Word limit/length 1500 wordsWeighting30% Due date 11:pm Thursday 19th NovemberOverviewIn this assessment exercise you should be able to provide us with evidence you understand what kinds of therapeutic interventions are available for people living with mental illness in Australia. The exercise is designed to encourage you to explore the research evidence-base that informs best practice in treatment of mental illness. To take as an example from the physical health sciences, according to Patti (2016), gastroesophageal reflux is a prevalent disease worldwide and is increasing because of the epidemic of obesity. Lifestyle modifications, proton pump inhibitors, and laparoscopic fundoplication are proven treatment modalities for this disease while endoscopic procedures have not been proven as effective.Patti MG (2016). An Evidence-Based Approach to the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. JAMA Surg. 151(1):73-8.We are looking for you to provide us evidence for the best treatment options for a person experiencing a mental illness of your choosing.Learning outcomesThis assessment task is aligned with the following learning outcomes: Identify and critique the policy and funding context of mental health service provision in primary mental health care and non-government organisation sectors. Integrate paradigms of service delivery ranging from the recovery to medical models and how these models translate to the non-government and primary health service delivery to consumers.Assessment detailsChoose a mental health problem commonly encountered in primary care. For the purpose of this assignment consider an uncomplicated diagnosable disorder such as an anxiety disorder, major depression, or bipolar affective disorder. Briefly describe a scenario /NRS83003 Mental Health in Community, Non-Government and Primary Health SettingsPage 9 of 16vignette of a person living with this problem (this may be fictional or based on someone you know).Provide a critical review of evidence based therapeutic interventions available to a person with this condition in the Australian primary care sector. Identify the barriers and enablers they may have in accessing these. The total word count should not exceed 1500 words.Submission formatPlease upload your assessment response as a Word document via Turnitin in Blackboard.NRS83003 Mental Health in Community, Non-Government and Primary Health SettingsPage 10 of 16Assessment Two RubricCriterionMarksHD+HDDCHigh PLow PHigh FLow F Scenario and description of mental illness. Introduction
Mental health is a serious concern and is equally comparable to any other physical health issue. However, yet mental health is one of the most neglected aspects within the society and lack of interventions and awareness for the same are the two major factors. Mental health intervention can facilitate recovery from any form of tragedy or trauma and any other underlying psychiatric disorder.
Therapeutic interventions can be considered as a group of efforts made by individuals in order to improve the mental health condition of the individuals, especially those that refuse to seek help or are unable to accept or initiate it. This paper would discuss one such mental health problem along with the critical review of therapeutic interventions. Likewise, efforts will be made to present the mental health condition through a fictional story. Moreover, this assignment will end with barriers and enablers while accessing these interventions.
Mental Health Problem Commonly Encountered in Primary Care
Depression is one of the most common and prevalent mental health disorders. Depression is classified as a mood disorder and it may be characterised by the feelings of loss, anger, sadness and much more during everyday activities of an individual. It would be essential to understand that every individual might experience depression in different way that is, it might interfere with the daily routine activities, efficiency and productivity. Major depression can cause a variety of symptoms such as, negative and uncertain mood change, anger, aggressiveness, feeling sad or empty, inability to concentrate, delayed responses during conversations, restlessness, sleep, fatigue and much more (Kupfer, Frank & Phillips, 2016).
There can be numerous causes for the existence and occurrence of depression. Family history of depression is one of the most critical factors and it could be considered as the major determinant supporting the occurrence of depression. Likewise, severe childhood trauma and other stressful or shocking events could also lead to depression. Pre-existing medical conditions such as insomnia, chronic pain, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ageing and loneliness could also considered as factors facilitating the occurrence and development of depression.
Further, Craighead, Johnson, Carey and Dunlop (2015) mentioned that depression could be of several types. However, major depressive disorder is one of the most critical and severe forms of depression. Major depressive disorder is characterised by persistent feelings of hopelessness, sadness as well as worthlessness. Likewise, significant weightless, loss of interest in regular activities, delayed cognitive abilities, fatigue, recurring death and suicidal thoughts are also other symptoms reflecting the existence of major depressive disorder. Accordingly, sudden transition of mood and lack of interest while working on things, which used to be a source of happiness, also reflects the existence of depression.
