Assignment 1 Four short (500 word) essays. Written Assignment (2000 words) Due Date: (Due on 11.59 pm Sunday 16th April 2019) The aim of this assignment is to have you (a) differentiate between ethical and unethical counselling practices, and (b) to evaluate models of supervision appropriate for counselling practice. To complete this assessment item successfully, you are required to submit four (4) x 500 word essays addressing the following topics:(1) distinguish ethical from unethical counselling practices(2) apply appropriate clause/s from relevant ethics codes to case scenarios(3) explain role of supervision in maintaining ethical counselling practice(4) apply appropriate supervision models and practices to scenarios.Essay 1 (500 words) Read the two scenarios below. Compare and contrast the two scenarios in terms of ethical principles and ethical standards. Decide which of the scenarios reflects a more ethical counselling practice, and explain why.
Scenario OnePeta is a counsellor in private practice. She is seeing a new client, Murray. Murray has never seen a counsellor before, and thus does not really know what to expect. Peta notices his nervousness, and has seen it many times before. In Peta’s experience, she has found that allowing clients to “friend” her on her facebook page is a great way to help clients feel at ease. She explains to Murray that it seems to help clients achieve a sense of comfort, knowing that they have access to her 24/7, “although most of my clients don’t need it” she adds. She immediately asks Murray for his facebook identity, and put a “friend request” in. Murray feels instantly at ease, and begins to feel comfortable talking to Peta about why he has come to counselling. He believes that she is going to be a really good counsellor for him.
Scenario TwoPeta is a counsellor in private practice. She is seeing a new client, Murray. Murray has never seen a counsellor before, and thus does not really know what to expect. Peta notices his nervousness, and has seen it many times before. In Peta’s experience, she has found that talking to the client about what counselling is, what confidentiality means in the context of counselling, what to expect from counselling, what his role is, and what her role is, really helps clients feel at ease. Peta also talks about how normal it is to feel nervous when first coming to counselling, and how courageous it is. Murray expresses some concerns about bumping into her outside of therapy since he does not want his friends to know he needs counselling. Peta responds by telling Murray that this is a common concern and invites Murray to discuss how they should react if they accidentally meet each other between sessions. Murray feels a little bit better, and begins to recount why he has decided to come to counselling.Points to remember:1.This is an essay, so essay structure is expected a.Introduction (≈ 50 - 100 words) b.Body (≈350 words) c.Conclusion (≈ 50 - 100 words)2.Include referencing3.Include APA formatting conventions
Essay 2 (500 words) Read the two scenarios below. Decide which ethical standards, from both ACA and PACFA, are most relevant when deciding if the counsellors are acting ethically or not, and explain why they are relevant.
Scenario OneMatthew works as a counsellor in a large organisation. He has been seeing a member of staff due to work-related stress for some time. He receives an anonymous letter about his client, which states that it is important he knows the client has “mental health problems”. It then goes on to detail things that client has allegedly said or done in the workplace. The client does not know this letter has been sent and Matthew does not wish to cause the client further distress by declaring it, given that it is anonymous.Scenario TwoSuzanne has worked in a primary care counselling agency for four years and has become good friends with a colleague there, Michelle. Michelle is a highly respected and liked member of the team. Suzanne discovered recently that Michelle has been drinking heavily, and for some time. While she appears to be sober at work, Suzanne is fearful for Michelle’s clients and her capacity to work professionally. Michelle became distressed when asked about this, and begged Suzanne not to say anything to her manager – she would “lose her job and become unemployable”. Suzanne feels torn between trying to support her friend to turn things around personally, and the wellbeing of her clients, which increasingly seems to be compromised.

Essay 4 (500 words) Read the following scenario and explain what approach/model of supervision is best applied by a supervisor in order to maintain ethical practice.
Kathleen is a senior counsellor within a government organisation who, by default of her seniority, regularly supervises junior counselling staff. One of her supervisees, Tamara, has been a staff member for 18 months, and has a good reputation in the organisation. In fact, Kathleen has noticed that other counselling staff are beginning to informally consult Tamara on issues concerning them about their clients, instead of Kathleen. Tamara has never received any supervision training, and as part of her ongoing employment, is required to continue to see you for her counselling supervision. You have noticed, lately, that the supervision sessions involve discussing the dilemmas that other counselling staff are consulting Tamara with.

Short Essay 1
a. Introduction
In the first situation, it was observed that Peta, a private counsellor, suggested her client, Murray with sending friend request in social media, so that Murray feels at ease while communicating with Peta. As it is common for the first time for the patients to feel nervous, Peta has observed making a friendly connection will help Peta in building a trusting relationship with the client. This will also help Murray to communicate better. However, this kind of counselling process has certain gaps that can be identified.
b. Situation 1
Often professional ethics helps in dictating the ambiguous boundaries in between the potential clients. The social media platform such as Facebook provides people with the power to share as well as connect with a greater number of people. Often, the material that the client posts can, at times, helps in the therapy practice. The practitioner can understand what is going through the client’s mind, which plays an important role in guiding the therapy practice for the client (Finlay, 2019).
However, often this practice can raise a certain ethical question. If the counsellor wishes to send a request and have a process of online therapy, it is crucial that the counsellor has a policy document for social media. This document needs to include certain points that will declare the privacy of the client. The rationale of the document, the friending policy, public conversation and the location-oriented service needs to be clarified in the document. It needs to be remembered that the Peta has certain boundaries as a therapist, which she needs to adhere to while using social channels as a part of the counselling or therapy process.
According to the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct (2007), it is crucial that the counsellors and therapist need to seek approval of the ethical committee and follow strictly the guidelines that have been provided by PACFA while collecting information related to the patient. In addition, it is important that the therapist provides rigorous attention so that the integrity, value and quality of the help to the patient (Kiarie, 2017).
Peta needs to consider and emphasise on the integrity and transparency with the patient Murray. Even when she adopts the social media as a way to create a rapport with the patient Murray, it is essential for Pte in addition to the consent form provided to the patient-related social media policy, Pete needs to explain the process and the purpose verbally. This will ensure that Murray is comfortable with the accessibility of Pete on the social media platform.
c. Conclusion
Supervision is one of the foremost important aspects of any clinical role. According to PACFA Code of Ethics, it is necessary for Peta to ensure that Murray is the primary focus during the therapy and counselling process. This will ensure the good fare of the patient and even allow the steps that are being taken by Peta in building a patient-physician relationship to be ethical and maintaining a professional standard of practice.
Short Essay 1
a. Introduction
In this scenario, Murray is a patient who has come to meet the counsellor Peta. Since it was the first time for Murray to visit a counsellor, he was nervous. As a therapist and counsellor, it is the responsibility of Peta, to provide confidence and build trust among the patient so that Murray can explain his reason for the visit.
It is common to feel overwhelmed and nervous for the first time and Peta's approach to discussing with the client is highly ethical and helpful in professional practice. This approach of discussing with the client had also helped Murray in explaining why he preferred the session remain anonymous and his inhibition related to his acquaintance coming to known that he knows Peta or have been taking counselling...
