Assignment 1: Interface Design and HCI Theories

Answer the following topics Interface Design and HCI Theories separately and provide rationale on each topic.

1)"Interface Design Guidelines" Please respond to the following:

· Imagine you are leading a team of designers for a new software product. During the kickoff meeting, the team starts to discuss design guidelines. About half of the team complains that guidelines can be too specific, incomplete, hard to apply, and sometimes wrong. The other half feels that building on experience from design leaders contributes to steady improvements. Take a stance on this debate and support your position. Then discuss how you would solve this conflict to get your meeting back on track.

· Of the eight principles of design, called “Golden Rules” (strive for consistency, cater to universal usability, offer informative feedback, design dialogues to yield closure, prevent errors, permit easy reversal of actions, support internal locus of control, and reduce short-term memory load) choose the one that is most important and create an argument supporting your choice. Use specific examples to support your argument.

8 Golden Rules of Interface Design

  1. Strive for consistency

  2. Cater to universal usability

  3. Offer informative feedback

  4. Design dialogs to yield closure

  5. Prevent errors

  6. Permit easy reversal of actions

  7. Support internal locus of control

  8. Reduce short term memory load

2) "HCI Theories" Please respond to the following:

· Imagine you are the manager of a medium-sized IT department. While walking through the hall one day, you overhear a senior-level software developer telling a newly hired developer to focus on improving his coding skills rather than learning about theories related to human-computer interaction. Take a position on whether you agree or disagree with the senior software developer. Support your decision.

· Watch the video titled “Webstock '11: John Gruber – The Gap Theory of UI Design”, (46 min 47 s), located athttp://vimeo.com/21742166?ab.Then, discuss the idea that all applications have to be visually consistent. Argue whether you agree or disagree with the idea and why.

Assignment 1: Interface Design and HCI Theories
Answers:
1)
· Rationale: Whether the software life cycle of the new product to be designed is spiral, waterfall or a
ny other type, it will be benefitted from the application of design guidelines. We should first specify the guidelines that apply to the SDLC of the product to the best of our knowledge and experience. The team should collectively identify the specific ‘shoulds’ and ‘shalls’ that apply to the users of the product, their environment and all the constraints that hold relevance in its implementation. The guidelines will help the team in making the milestones coherent and will enhance readability. The guidelines will ensure consistency in order to build trust in our project and the pre-set templates will further save us time during resolving recurring issues since we will use the templates rather than using creativity. The project objectives should be given utmost importance where expectations shall be managed, compliance approach be determined, standard guidelines are chosen and tailored according to the product. Those tailored standards shall be applied in designing the interface and usability shall be tested.
The team should focus on documenting only relevant guidelines which will actually be used, and establish priorities among the chosen guidelines. All team mates who would be directly or materially affected by any particular standard guideline, will get an opportunity to explain their interest and participate in the development process of those standard guidelines.
· Golden Rule: Strive for Consistency
Users strive to learn general concepts about products and systems through an interface. They then apply their learnings to different parts of...
