Assignment 1_ Short-Answer - 2022_2023 ...MM-291-002) - Saskatchewan Polytechnic COMM 291: Interpersonal Communications Assignment 1: Short-Answer Questions Learning Outcomes 1-2, Chapters 1-3 Total: /60 marks (weight: 20% of final grade) Please note: This is an individual assignment. Instructions: For each situation, write a brief response (approximately one paragraph) using complete sentences and correct grammar and spelling. Responses will be evaluated for accuracy, detail, and expression. Remember, it is not enough to identify relevant concepts; you must also explain how those concepts may be applied to the described situation. Citation and references: Every time you use information – whether a paraphrase or a direct quotation – that you learned about through your readings or through class activities, you must communicate to your reader that you are using somebody else’s ideas or words. For this assignment (and all other assignments in COMM 291), please follow American Psychological Association (APA) style (7th Edition) for citations and references. The next paragraph will explain the basics of APA citation and references. For more information about using APA citation and references, please visit the Sask Polytech Library Citation Support: https://saskpolytech.libguides.com/APA7/home. You must always indicate to your reader when you are using information or words that you have learned through class and readings. At the point in your answer when you use information you have learned, indicate that to your reader through a parenthetical citation: Examples: “Conflict involves more than a simple disagreement between people” (Adler et al, 2020). *Note: When there are three or more authors, use the surname of the first author followed by “et al.”, which means, “and others.” Adler et al. (2020) give the following definition of conflict: “An expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals” (p. 279). In this situation, my friend and I affected each other: we were ‘interdependent parties.’ We had different aims: ‘incompatible goals.’ We had only so much money to spend, and we each had our own ideas about how to spend it: ‘scarce resources and interference from the other party.’” At the end of the assignment, include a list of all the sources of your information. If you use the textbook, you should include the following entry in your list of references. Example: References Adler, R. B., Rolls, J. A., & Proctor, R. F., II. (2021). Look: Looking out, looking in. (4th Canadian ed.). Nelson. https://saskpolytech.libguides.com/APA7/home Your instructor may not require you to include citation and references; however, you should still indicate the sources of the information you present (lectures, manual, textbook). Assignment Questions: 1) Situation: Your co-worker, Gregory, is a lot of fun to go out with on a Friday night. He laughs loudly at jokes, and he’s known to use “f-bombs” (profanity) when he’s having a good time. However, you notice that Gregory’s behaviour doesn’t change when he’s at work. He’s loud, he makes inappropriate jokes – and laughs loudly at them, and his language makes some of the clients uncomfortable. Identify three characteristics of competent communicators (as described in the textbook) and briefly explain how Gregory could apply these characteristics to his communications – at work and outside of work. Responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria: ❑ Clearly and correctly identified and applied three characteristics to situation with sufficient detail. 8-10 marks ❑ One or two characteristics accurately identified and adequately applied. 5-7 marks ❑ Characteristics not identified and/or poorly applied. 0-4 marks 2) Situation: Your workplace includes a range of people, from older Canadian-born people to younger people who come from countries around the world. Identify three characteristics of competent intercultural communicators (as discussed in the textbook) and explain how you could apply these characteristics to your workplace communications. 0-4 marks 3) Situation: Your co-worker – who is younger than you and is a newcomer to Canada – has been showing up late for the last week. Because of her lateness, you have had to stay later until she arrives. You don’t know her well, and when you try to engage with her, she avoids making eye contact. Now, you are coming down with a cold, and you are tired of covering for your co-worker. Using the influences on perception discussed in class and in the textbook, name and explain briefly how three influences might affect your views of your co-worker’s behaviour. Responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria: ❑ Clearly and accurately identified three influences of perception and explained their relevance to the situation with sufficient detail. 8-10 marks ❑ One or two influences of perception accurately identified and adequately explained. 5-7 marks ❑ Influences not accurately and/or poorly explained. 0-4 marks 4) How do you manage your identity in the workplace (or at school)? Give at least one specific example for each of the following: manner, appearance, and setting (label each example). In addition, name and explain one specific reason (from the reasons given in LOOK, pages 47 and 48) for your workplace identity management. Be sure to appropriately punctuate and reference any quotations taken from the textbook. Responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria: ❑ Clearly and accurately identified three examples of identity management (manner, appearance, setting). Named and explained one specific reason for workplace identity management. 8-10 marks ❑ One or two examples of identify management of accurately identified and/or specific reason for workplace identity management adequately explained. 5-7 marks ❑ Examples not accurately identified and/or reason poorly explained. 0-4 marks 5) Situation: Yesterday, your friend did not answer your text message. She usually responds in less than hour – or even faster. Using the exact words you would say to her, create a perception check – as discussed in the textbook and in class – labelling each part. Responses will be evaluated according to the following criteria: ❑ Exact wording of all four parts of the perception check is given, and parts are accurately identified (labelled). Response demonstrates accurate understanding of a perception check. 8- 10 marks ❑ Something’s missing: Either the perception check is paraphrased (not the exact words you would say), parts are missing, OR parts are not accurately identified. 5-7 marks ❑ Not a perception check: Model is not followed, wording is paraphrased, most parts missing, parts not correctly identified. 1-4 marks 6) Bonus Question: Describe a situation from your own life in which you experienced a problem in communication. Using the transactional communication model, as described in Chapter 1 and discussed in class, explain the parts of your communication situation (the communicators, message(s), channel(s), noise, and environment). Analyze the situation through the lense of the transactional communication model, and explain which part(s) you believe caused the communication problem. (For example, was there a certain type of noise disrupting the communication? Was an appropriate channel used for the type of message? Were there issues in the environment?) Then, briefly explain what you would do in the future to avoid this type of issue or handle it in a positive way. Answering the bonus questions completely, accurately, and with sufficient detail will result in six bonus points (10%) being added to your overall assignment grade. Evaluation of Writing and Presentation (for entire assignment): ❑ Well written, with few or no errors (three or fewer). Sources properly indicated. Correctly formatted. 8-10 marks ❑ Some writing errors (more than three). Some sources properly indicated.
