Assignment 2 Purpose: The purpose of this assessment is to: Assess student’s understanding of the supply chain process from the beginning to the marketplace. Description: Students will select a product (any product), usually available on market shelfs. Student will go behind the product and track the journey of the whole product from farm to fork or from raw material to our homes. During studying the journey, students will apply all the concepts learnt throughout the course and will understand the logistics and supply chain strategies adopted by the company which produces and supplies the product. Students will focus specially on procurement, inventory management, warehousing, supply chain and environmental supply chain aspects of the product. Introduction
For this assignment in order to understand and analyse a supply chain process, this paper choses the pr
oduct sugar as well as the sugar industry. The sugar industry subsumes the production, processing as well as marketing of sugar. Globally sugar is extracted from sugarcane as well as sugar beet. In order to understand the entire process of a supply chain management of a specific product or its strategic aspects, a student should first analyse the various steps such as designing, farming, manufacturing, packaging as well as transporting while undergoing the journey of supply chain process. This paper would specifically focus on procurement, inventory management, warehousing, supply chain and environmental supply chain aspect of the product.
Supply Chain Strategies: Sugar Industry
Supply chain is the entire process of production and delivering a product or service from the very beginning stage of sourcing the raw materials to the final supply and delivery of the product to the customers. Keeping all the aspects in mind it maintains a logistic flow and strategies while producing the entire product into a presentable item, which can be delivered before the customers. As stated by Prajogo, Mena and Nair (2017), the supply chain lay outs all the aspects of the production process that includes the activities of each stage, the effective information that is being communicated, the human resources, the natural resources that are being transformed into useful materials, capital and other components that into the finish of the product. Therefore, mapping out the supply chain is one of the most crucial steps in performing an external analysis in a strategic planning process.
A student if undergoes this journey of analysing the supply chain management process of the sugar industry, then they should follow completely every step in this regard. Each stage of a supply chain is important for different businesses, for example in sugar industry identifying the raw materials used until the manufacturing and delivering processes. In this regard, the first strategy or step a student should understand is the processing and recognising the raw material. The generic supply chain begins with the sourcing and extraction of the raw materials. Then these raw materials are taken by a logistic provider to the supplier, which is known as the whole selling process. Then this specific product is being taken to the manufacturer and process into a finish product. After, completing the entire process the product goes to the distributor that whole sales the finished product, which is next delivered to a retailer. Finally, after purchasing the product from the whole sellers, the retailers sell the product in the store to the customer and finally it completes the entire logistic cycle.
In sugar industry, millers plan their cane supply to ensure that the mill operates at optimum capacity throughout the entire-session. They also check the quality of the cane within the supply area and at different times during the season to maximise the sugar production.
