Aside from the ethics of this case study, Firestone, The Tyre Company appears to have many problems within their leadership. It appears they have been aware of many issues regarding the safety and production problems of their tyres for a long time. However, in reading the paper, it can be argued several points of view may be apparent. Of these differing perspectives, it can be argued they either chose to ignore the issues or they did admit some potential problems and attempted to very loosely manage them with little regard to user/consumer ethics (CSR) or damage to their brand. Question 1
Firestone Tire and Rubber Company were founded in 1900 in Ohio. The company failed in the market due to a weak leadership strategy which is being resembled the recall programme for their tires. T
ires that were being manufactured by the company were not so much investigated at the first stage where it created a problem at the later stage. As per the case study, it is observed that Ford carry out their investigation and stated that the Firestone tires were incurred high failure rates. The company initiated the recall programme for their ATX and ATXII tires that were manufactured at their plant. It is observed that the company did not directly involve the customers in the tire recall programme which was a great mistake by them. They came into great confusion which forced them to initiate a reimbursement programme and get relief from the load. The company faced several issues and complaints about their tires because of several factors. Some factors include tire age, temperature and weight of the vehicle. If the company had focused on these issues properly then the turmoil could have been avoided.
Firestone possesses great potential in marketing the tires of automobiles and they are considered as the pioneer in terms of mass production of tires. Bridgestone merged with Firestone to form the world largest tire company. However, the merged entity failed in taking suitable decisions regarding their operations put them into turmoil. When NHTSA asked Firestone to increase their recall they should have taken more time and agreed on the deal to save their customers and their business also in the market. In an investigation, it was revealed that the company was aware of the risks that were associated with the tires and just ignored them to keep them far from problems. They should have increased the tire production rate to prevent themselves from the failure rate. It can be also stated that the company officials did not investigate the quality of the tires which should have done more to prevent the failure.
In case I was leading Firestone, I would have keep eye on the production process and ensured their quality before going into the market. According to me, the company could have focussed on the ethical issues in the business. It is believed that gaining the trust of the consumers is not easy but losing them is much easier. I would have measured the production process more ethically rather than just focusing on the profit. In terms of doing business for the long term, it is required to ensure the quality of the products to ensure smooth operation (Hastig and Sodhi, 2020). I would have focussed on consumer ethics more if we were in the lead role. Building strong ethics in business helps in cultivating effective teamwork and ensures high productivity. It becomes the duty of the leader to make the staff about the ethical advantage in the business to play for long term and ensure high customer satisfaction.
