Assignment Instructions The Nature of the Assignment In this assignment we are using the NVivo software as a data analysis tool in the field of qualitative research. We are going to be using secondary data in the form of TripAdvisor reviews in the services industry. In a very basic sense we would like to understand how three service providers perform in the eyes of the public. You have the freedom to decide which service industry you will investigate. You may choose restaurants, wine bars, hotel accommodation, B & B lodgings, shopping centres, paintball providers, laser tag, massage therapists, or any type of service provider you like. You should choose 3 different service providers in that same industry and it is important that they have a good range of TripAdvisor reviews made about their business. These three service providers become what we call the focal case of your data analysis. You will need to build two different case classifications. The first classification is one for a focal case with a about 6 to 10 attributes if you can get that many. The second classification is for a reviewer case and sensibly the reviewer case may only need about 4 or 5 attributes. Your sources are the TripAdvisor pages that contain reviews of each of your focal cases. It makes sense that you have a focal case front page that includes the basic information about the business. You can save the PDF of that page directly from Chrome. Your second type of source is a review page, still relating to that focal case. It is there that you need the full reviews to be showing so you open up all of the extra information on the page, before savig a PDF. For this second type of source you are best to highlight only the content you wish to save in Chrome, right click and then save as PDF. With those case classifications built you can then code the three focal cases and about 30 review cases - about 10 cases where the reviewer has reviewed one of the focal cases. With the focal and review cases classified and coded you are then on to coding in qualitative themes - that is the content of the reviews. Here you go through the process of coding thematic nodes - these are the blue nodes in NVivo. As you see a part of the review that you think is useful and speaks about something, for instance "value for money" you highlight the relevant piece of text and code in NVivo to at least three different areas. The three areas you would code a "value for money" theme would be to the focal case, the reviewer case, and a thematic node that she would probably just call "value for money". The coding process is really where you spend a great deal of time. It is where you develop insight to what the sources tell you about the businesses. As you get into the coding process, and certainly by the end, you will have developed a web of inter-relationships of focal cases, reviewer cases and themes as represented by the blue thematic nodes. You can also classify relationships between cases and also between cases and themes. It is useful also to use a range of queries throughout the building of your NVivo file. A word frequency query is a good early query to run with and that can run onto a text search query. That helps build insight and assists with the coding process of thematic nodes. Towards the end of your process you may do coding queries and right at the end a matrix query gives you the equivalent sort of insight as a cross tabulation in quantitative methods. Maps can be useful in identifying which reviewers provided reviews for which focal cases. Also, a Mind Map may be useful for understanding how different themes may be interrelated. You have a great deal of creative opportunity here. Importantly, throughout the process of building your NVivo file you should keep a record of your time spent in the research log, tabulate the development of your thinking in the research journal, and record your reflections about what you are learning regarding the qualitative process in the reflection journal. These are all internal documents within the nVivo file. If you are looking for extension of application you may include other sources and see how they relate to the themes you have identified from the TripAdvisor source. Importantly, you must get this file to your examiner with no bugs.  Assignment Instructions Although none of your NVivo work will be assessed until you submit your whole project, you need to be working in it constantly and developing your project in a consistent manner. There is no particular order of build required, and much of the work will be iterative, with cyclical returns to different stages as you progress, the order you should (loosely) be building your project is as follows: 1. Decide your research topic and choose a name  2. Create an NVivo Project and give it your Research Project name  · COLLECTING AND ORGANISING DATA Documenting the Process: Research Journal and Research Log · Research Journal Your research problem and research process are stated and well described (Research Journal) · CODING THE CASES  Two relevant case classifications are created consistent with research problem. · Themes A suitable number of themes, relevant to the research problem, are coded as (blue) thematic nodes · CODING RELATIONSHIPS A suitable number of relationship classifications have been built relevant to the research problem · CREATING THE BIG PICTURE The "web" of interrelated links is visible - a good volume of Cases, Nodes and Relationships all adding richness to the data   · Mind Map A mind map attempting to draw together thematic nodes, focal cases and some relationships 1) COLLECTING AND ORGANISING DATA Documenting the Process: Research Journal and Research Log This area will be used by the assessor to leave comments related to this criterion. 2) Research Journal Your research problem and research process are stated and well described (Research Journal) This area will be used by the assessor to leave comments related to this criterion. 3) CODING THE CASES Two relevant case classifications are created consistent with research problem. This area will be used by the assessor to leave comments related to this criterion. 4) Themes A suitable number of themes, relevant to the research problem, are coded as (blue) thematic nodes This area will be used by the assessor to leave comments related to this criterion. 5) CODING RELATIONSHIPS A suitable number of relationship classifications have been built relevant to the research problem This area will be used by the assessor to leave comments related to this criterion. 6) CREATING THE BIG PICTURE The "web" of interrelated links is visible - a good volume of Cases, Nodes and Relationships all adding richness to the data 7) Mind Map A mind map attempting to draw together thematic nodes, focal cases and some relationships
