1. Outline the physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual issues to be aware of when caring for a person who is blind and elderly – (5 marks)

Patrick is an 82 years old individual and is suffering from blindness. Blindness itself is major concern for the individual suffering from it and it would be essential to realize that anyone suffering from vision loss is already going through feelings of shock fear, loneliness and emotional isolation. Patrick being blind and old at the same time increases the level of care requirements because he not only requires emotional or cognitive support but also physical support.
Physical support requirement will include help while moving, sitting, and going for the washroom, walk and much more. Emotional issues to consider while caring for Patrick will emphasize upon the feeling of shock and loneliness, he might question the sense of his life and almost every aspect of living. Therefore, he would require support in terms of motivational speeches, which care given would provide and appreciation as he might performing some work. Likewise, being there with him might also help to reduce the feeling of loneliness and isolation.
Digital age has made it feasible for the caretaker as well as, the visually impaired individuals to perform and experience things easily. Therefore, devices with text to speech availability could be used, which will allow Patrick to convey his needs anytime and anywhere. Likewise, such devices could also be used to fulfill spiritual needs because spiritual content is available online, which Patrick could easily access.
It would be essential to consider that social and psychological issues would be the major issues to cope up with while taking care of Patrick because he might not be able to go out and meet people. Rather, mobiles and desktop devices with speaker options could be used in order to allow him to hear his family members and friends. This could definitely help him to gain the sense of calm and not feel isolated from his family members because of his blindness.
2. Contrasting as well as Comparing Distant Care Needs between Patrick and a Sighted Resident
Visually impaired individual have many distinct requirements that a sighted resident and these differences are present in almost every functioning of life and healthcare workers are required to understand them effectively. A sighted resident could easily walk without falling or hitting to any obstacles, while Patrick will not be able to walk freely and will require assistance all the time, especially if walking on stairs, road or any other crowded area. Further, activities such as bathing will be very easy for a sighted resident; however, Patrick is prone to severe injuries if he might be left alone to take bath.
Likewise, a sighted resident would be able to play, run, meet new people easily and observe the changes in society, while Patrick will not be able to walk on road even alone. Fundamental habits such as, sleeping, eating and dressing might not be effected much because Patrick has been performing them from a very long time; however, some assistance will be required. Instead, in order to avoid any shock or trauma, it would also be required to inform Patrick before performing such activity with him.
Similarly, Patrick would be required to be in constant attention because he is not only suffering from blindness but also from old age; therefore, providing him right medications at right time will also be the job of care giver, which might not be required for a sighted individual.
