Commercials in print media are generally created for a targeted audience. In fact, their creation is more such as a rigorous process to include all features of the product that that can facilitate the user with lots of possibilities to have some ‘change’, something ‘quite happening’ in his or her life. By the term ‘happening and change’, it is implied that the advertisement persuades the user to buy it because it is one of the best suitable thing that meets his or her desires.
Pantene, the renowned company of cosmetic products, has launched a range of shampoos and conditioners that can address the growing needs of hair related issues for females. In one of their commercial campaigns, which are selected for the present analysis, Pantene shampoo advertisement uses the metaphoric language, visual appeals as well as implied meaning of success as the core components of a female either as a working professional or as a homemaker.
The Metaphoric Language
At first, it is significant to note that the language of the commercial is chosen as metaphoric, deep in meaning and it can have as many explanations as possible. The catchy tag line below the brand name is “strong can go to any length” and there can be some insightful interpretations of this sentence. The first and most obvious one explanation is that if the hair are strong, they can go to any length without any trouble (Burg et al., 2017). At most of the times, the problems that female confront now days is to grow hair without difficulty which keeps them wondering to choose the best options for hair care.
In the process of growing, they confront problems such as split-ended hair and hair fall is even a major issue. However, as per the promise made by the shampoo, they are allowed to grow hair up to any length they, if they apply Pantene Shampoo. The hair can grow “strong” by their roots, if this shampoo is applied on. Additionally, in the explanatory part on commercial image, it is written, “You can go further than you ever thought”.
It justifies the tagline of the commercial in the sense that females using this shampoo need not worry about the length of their hair because they can grow it up to any length and that can be beyond their imagination. What makes this sentence appear to be...
