Introduction
Healthcare is an every growing industry, which requires continuous evolution as well as innovation in order to improve the quality of care delivery as well as to provide enhanced services for the patients. Increased use of telecommunication as well as multimedia technologies has allowed the inculcation of integrated mobile as well as wireless healthcare delivery system. Mobile Health (mHealth) is a new concept introduced in healthcare, which supports and allows healthcare providers to delivery their services through the use of mobile phones, personal digital assistance, wireless devices, patient monitoring devices and much more.
This paper would present critical appraisal of two research articles reflecting the future scope of mHealth in Healthcare and Nursing. Further, efforts would be made to presented comprehensive summary of authorship, research design, data collection, analysis as well as the conclusion presented by authors. Likewise, this paper would conclude with certain limitations and recommendations including some personal recommendations on the subject.
1. Article 1
Jones, M., Morris, J., & Deruyter, F. (2018). Mobile healthcare and people with disabilities: current state and future needs. International journal of environmental research and public health, 15(3), 515 Retrieved from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5877060/pdf/ijerph-15-00515.pdf
The first paper selected to be critiqued is titled “Mobile healthcare and people with disabilities: current state and future needs”, published by Jones, Morris and Deruyter (2018). It deals in the analysis of the process of mobile healthcare, which is a very common technique now in the present days and its suitability for people with disabilities, currently as well as in future.
Authorship
Selbach, Motta-Roth and Schmidt (2018) mentioned that authorship is an essential and sensitive aspect of any research paper. This is majorly because authorship is based on certain criteria, which are as followed substantial contribution of authors towards designing and conception of the work. Likewise, Jones, Morris and Deruyter (2018) also presented a research, which reflected the use of mHealth for people with disabilities along with its current as well as future needs. It would be essential to consider that the article does not provide any specific information regarding the contribution of authors.
However, it is evident that Michael Jones and John Morris belonged to Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute, Shepherd Center and are the first authors of this paper. Here, Michael Jones has also been listed as corresponding author. Therefore, he was responsible for most of the work and took primary responsibility. Frank Deruyter is the second author of this paper and belongs to Department of Surgery, Duke University Medical Center.
Research Questions, Aims/Objectives or Hypotheses
Research question is one of the major aspects of any research and this is majorly because of the fact that research question sets the basis of the research paper. In other words, research question is set by research project and the whole research is performed in order to seek answer for the research question. It is noted that the research presented by Jones et al. (2018) was very specific towards the implication of mHealth for disabled.
In other words, their major motive was to identify the negative and positives of mHealth implications for people with disabilities. This was majorly because health disparities exist with respect to the implication of health care services between disabled and non-disabled individuals. Likewise, Hong, Zhou, Fang and Shi (2017) reported and argued upon the fact that that more percentage of disabled individuals own smartphones or devices; however, the rate of mHealth usages was significantly lower to the non-disabled individuals.
Therefore, the major research question here was “Does health disparities exists with respect to the use of mHealth among disabled individuals.” Both of the selected papers presented different research questions; however, it would be essential to understand that the existence of health disparities is fostered by the lack of policies or strategies required for the implication of mHealth.
Analyzing the significance of research objectives and justifying for the absence of research aim in this paper, the major objectives of the study presented by Jones et al. (2018) to identify current disparities in mHealth with respect to disabled individuals, along with emerging solutions towards mHealth solution, for the people with disabilities. There was no specific hypothesis presented by any of the selected research studies; therefore, this aspect would be considered as a major limitation of both the research studies. Major significance of the research presented by both the papers could be from single origin and the major aim behind the study is to make implications of mHealth easier.
Research Design
Research design is the reflection of strategy used by authors while conducting the study. Therefore, it would be essential to consider that assessing the research design of any study is a primary step while conducting its critical appraisal. LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2017) mentioned that the overall strategy, used by researcher, in order to integrate various components of the study, through a logical and coherent manner, could be considered as a research design.
Jones et al. (2018) reflects the use of a Causal-Comparative/Quasi-Experimental research design. In this research design authors or the researchers tends to identify a causative relationship between the independent and dependent variable. However, it would be essential to understand that this type of research design is more suggestive because the researcher does not have any complete or total control over the independent variable.
Data Collection
One of the most variable as well as sensitive parts of any research is data collection. This is majorly because analysis of this data would provide answer to the research question; therefore, data collection needs to be done in a standardized and systemic fashion. As supported by Mkandawire (2019), data collection can be simply presented as the process of collecting or gathering information with respect to the research variables.
It would be essential to understand that Jones et al. (2018) unlike above presented study provided the readers with a systematic explanation of data collection strategy used by them. They used three methods for data collection concerning current state of mHealth for individuals with disabilities. Firstly, peer- reviewed articles or journals were collected using key words ‘mobile health’ and ‘people with disability’. Databases used...
