Cultural Interview and Listening Assignment Part 1: Look for someone you know outside of class who has a different cultural background than you. For this assignment, we are defining culture as it is stated in Section 2.1 in the text. Tell them about this assignment and ask if you could spend 15-20 minutes asking them questions about their culture. Structure your questions within the perspective of being a tourist, someone new to their culture (sample questions below). Use the Active Listening skills in Section 4.3 in the text and those in the Listening Competency article to help you be a more thoughtful listener. Take extensive notes while you’re trying to listen. Make sure to obtain permission first from your interviewee! Part 2: Immediately following the interview, analyze your intercultural interview experience for two essentials: First, what you learned from this cultural interview experience, and, second, what you learned about being an effective listener. Your findings should be expressed via a short answer (hamburger) essay. Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-page minimum, 2-page maximum. Part 3: As you start constructing your essay, make sure to write an introduction telling us how the interview was for you. I want to know if this was an intimidating or enjoyable experience. Did you have any intercultural difficulties? Do you think they enjoyed this experience? I also want to know the location, date, and time. Just set the scene briefly. As you analyze the intercultural communication in the body paragraphs, look back at their answers and think about what YOU learned. Did you learn anything new? Do you see any issues with what they said? Did you have trouble being a good listener or was it easy for you? Why? Be sure to give specific examples to ALL of these questions, as I don't want to play-by-play of the interview. I want what they said and your thoughts on it, as it relates to the concepts in Chapters 2 & 4 and the two articles. Refer to at least three concepts from our readings or textbook and bold them for me, so they are easy to find. For the ending paragraph, write about what you learned from doing this interview and what will stick with you for a very long time. What surprised you? Also, did this interview help you understand the other person's culture? I just want to know how you're going to use this information in the future to be a more effective communicator. Sample Interview Questions 1. What should I know about your culture’s history, governance? 2. What are the major values and beliefs of your culture? 3. What cultural customs might surprise me? 4. If I fell in love with someone from your culture, what would dating, and marriage practices be like? 5. What do the cultural practices of work and leisure look like? 6. What do you see as the most important thing we can do to build greater understanding between cultures? "North Seattle Community College Cultural Interview and Active Listening Assignment." N.p., n.d.
