Introduction
The study of business administration in the current market scenario has become a stepping stone to a wide range of prospective job opportunities. MBA courses help the students develop the skills necessary for working successfully in an organisatio
n. The courses repeatedly harp on the importance of leadership qualities, working as a team, decision-making capabilities of the students. The courses improve these qualities in the first place, in addition to that, it helps to develop, advertise and sell the products, create networks that helps the students to be aware of the business trends, know important people in the industry and learn from them in turn, teaches the strategies needed to effectively manage difficult situations and promote company image and maintain the company finance.
My study of Masters in Business Administration has helped me in a number of ways. It has considerably improved me both on the personal level, such as improving my leadership qualities, ways of communication, managerial capabilities as well as on the academic level such as providing real worldview of business situation, forward thinking, providing solution to multiple complications and so on. The reflective essay is inclusive of the following: discussion on the value of reflective practice for managers and leaders; learnings from my subject and consultancy research process; skills developed and a discussion on the importance of the course in my future endeavours.
The Value of Reflective Practice for Managers and Leaders
Reflective practice is an important introspective process for leaders and managers to use their self-awareness, behavioral pattern and interactions as a method of learning. According to Harry-Nana and Bosch (2020), this process helps inculcate the capacity of taking difficulties and challenges as learning process, build stronger connections within an organisation as well as in the market, build a sense of object-oriented thinking and satisfaction, both on the personal and professional levels. In my perspective reflective management helps the leaders and managers develop a wider perspective of dealing with the existing problems, by encouraging them to come up with quick solutions. As a result of this practice, positive results are seen within a span of time. Reflective practice encourages a solution-oriented culture. Therefore, the teams focus mostly on the task and its outcome together, reducing the scope of group conflicts.
Through the use of reflective practice, a leader or manager can easily understand the issues that instigate conflicts within the organisation and its impact on the performances of employees. In any organisation, if a deficit is noticed in the manager’s reflective process, the entire team or organisation has high chances of suffering. Without reflective practices and processes, the higher authorities, such as leaders and managers tend to blame the regular employees for improper work. However, I believe, reflective practices facilitate the managers and leaders to function as the bridge between the high authority of an organisation and the regular employees, thereby supporting and encouraging the latter, directing them as a team, meeting the client requirements and establish a good system of communication in an organisation.
According to the observations of Ukko et al. (2017), reflective management creates a ripple effect in an organisation, where development occurs both in the organisation as well as in the individual employees. As a result of this, an environment of complete understanding, harmony and fellowship is developed between leaders or managers and employees, employees and their clients, as well as the organisation and its goals and purpose. Along with the process of reflective practice, if an organisation follows the below mentioned guidelines, it can ensure the organisation’s high performance by the development of skills to reflect, objectively view and ask for effective suggestions, engage in a neutral feedback from a supervisor, who is external to the organisation, curtail the organisation to meet the needs of the customers and give adequate amount of importance to the learning process. In my opinion, through reflective practice and the effective application of the above-mentioned guidelines, an organisation can easily evade the common blame culture as noticed in various organisations, thereby surpassing the non-reflective leaders by becoming role models.
According to me, reflective process gives a lot of emphasis on both the art and skill of listening attentively. Reflective leaders use the heard stories and incidents to provide instances, when they engage in reflective thinking during need. This helps to bring in any change or new input and enrich the already-existing plan of work. Reflective practices equip a manager or leader to handle the personnel more effectively, inculcating in them the importance of thought and accountability. It helps align the thought-process of the leaders and employees with the organisation’s benefits, values, goals and culture, as a whole. This leads to a lesser need for micromanaging and solving problems. Effective thinking through reflective practices therefore, creates a healthy workplace environment, while improving the wellbeing of the employees simultaneously.
