Prepare auditing procedures for transactions and balances by conducting control and substantive Tests. 6. Understand the auditor's reporting obligations. Description: Each week students were provided with three tutorial questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The tutorial questions are available in the Tutorial Folder, for each week, on Blackboard. The Interactive Tutorials are designed to assist students with the process, skills and knowledge to answer the provided tutorial questions. Your task is to answer a selection of tutorial question for weeks 1 to 5 inclusive and submit these answers in a single document. 2 Submission Directions: The assignment will be submitted via Blackboard. Each student will be permitted only ONE submission to Blackboard. You need to ensure that the document submitted is the correct one. 3 Question 1 - Week 1 (7 marks) You have recently graduated from your university course and start work with an audit firm. You meet an old school friend, Nayan, for dinner — you haven't seen each other for several years. Nayan is surprised that you are now working as an auditor because your childhood dream was to be a ballet dancer. Unfortunately, your knees were damaged in a fall, and you can no longer dance. The conversation turns to your work, and Nayan wants to know how you do your job. Nayan cannot understand why an audit is not a guarantee the company will succeed. Nayan also thinks that company managers will lie to you in order to protect themselves. As an auditor, you would have to assume that you cannot believe anything a company manager says to you. Required: (a) Write a letter to Nayan explaining the concept of reasonable assurance, and how reasonable assurance is determined. Explain why an auditor cannot offer absolute assurance (3 marks). Liona's role includes managing the business affairs of the firm, and she is very worried about the amount of fees outstanding from audit clients. Broomers Pty Ltd, one of the client of Ross and Associates, has not paid its audit fees for two years despite numerous discussions between Liona, their audit partner Ball, and the management of Broomers Pty Ltd. Broomers Pty Ltd's management has promised the fees would have been paid before the audit report for this year has been published, Liona rang Ball this morning to ensure that the audit report was not issued because Broomers Pty Ltd had paid only 10 per cent of the outstanding account. She discovers that Ball is about to sign the audit report. 4 Required: (a) Explain the ethical problem in this case. Why is it a problem? (4 marks). (150 – 200 words) (b) What can be done about it? From January of the current year, the business has consistently paid its suppliers late, well in excess of the suppliers' normal credit terms. This has resulted in some suppliers requesting cash on delivery from the business. The auditor has reviewed the correspondence between the business and its bank and finds that the business has been experiencing cash flow problems for two years. Required: (a) Explain why determination of materiality is a matter of auditor judgment. Refer to both qualitative and quantitative materiality assessments (2 marks). In each of the following independent and material situations assume that the client is a reporting entity and that a general-purpose financial report has been prepared and audited: Event 1: Part of Steel Limited's operations are in South America. Recent changes of government have made it impossible for you to verify the key accounts of inventory, fixed assets and cash and related income statement balances. you are in good health. Thank you also supporting me and giving me advice. As I am into the new profession of auditor you requested me to discuss the concept of reasonable assurance and so I am writing you this letter.
According to the auditing terms, Reasonable Assurance refers to some assurance that an auditor provides to its clients regarding the absence of any kind of material misstatements in the financial statement and that there are negligible chances that it would not be prevented or detected promptly (Valipour, H., Moradi, J. and Moazaminezhad, H., 2012). It means that the auditors carry out their responsibility with due care. If the auditor aims to achieve reasonable assurance he should gather enough audit evidence that will lead to a reduction of risk at an acceptably lower level.
The auditor can provide only reasonable assurance and not an absolute assurance because there are certain inherent limitations of audit that prevents it to give absolute assurance. But the auditor performs his duty with due care based on the information provided. Some of the limitations include errors by a human, lack of clear instructions for certain accounting treatments, etc.

Hope you are doing well. I am happy to share that I am enjoying my new profession as an auditor. Thank you for your support always. As asked by you, I would like to elaborate on Professional Scepticism in this letter.
Professional Scepticism refers to skill present in auditors that involve a questioning mind making auditors alert to situations (Chiang, C., 2016). While any engagement, their state of mind is such that can easily get hold of any errors or questions that they find unusual in the financial statements.
It shall be incorrect to say that the managers are deceived always. To get a conclusion regarding this, the auditor should use his professional skepticism to examine the managers' and documents and give their opinion based on that.

As seen in the case given, both Liona and Ball are the partners of an audit firm Ross & Associate. Liona is responsible to manage the business affairs and Ball to carry out audit engagements. Therefore, it is expected that both the partners have mutual understanding and they coordinate & cooperate among themselves in each other’s matter.
In the given case, Liona the managing partner noticed that a client Broomers Pty Ltd. has not paid audit fees for the last two years. Thus, there was a decision know to Ball, the Broomers ltd. and Liona that they will not get their audit report for this year if they don't clear the outstanding amount. But, later on, Liona noticed that Ball was about to sign this year’s audit report. The ethical issue that arose was that Ball didn't coordinate with his business partner before signing the report. He was least bothered whether the entire amount was received and did not pay any respect to the statement given by Liona. It is a problem as there is a lack of understanding between the two, which may affect the quality of work Ross & associate provides negatively.
PART B
Both the partners should work transparently and with mutual understanding between them. Each one of them should consult another before taking any business decision. It will increase the respect they have for one another and also they will work together to deliver the best services. In the case given Liona’s statement was not respected by Ball which led to the arising of an ethical issue.
