You will need to write a short essay justifying the importance of addressing your chosen public health issue and based on this information prepare an infographic for your target audience. An infographic is an innovative and engaging method of visually communicating health information. It may help in increasing people’s knowledge, awareness of the issue and make informed decisions.
EssayFirst, you will need to choose a current public health issue from the list provided below (if you have a desire to explore other public health issue not listed here, please contact the unit convener for the approval): • Bullying in schools • Low fruit and vegetable consumption • High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) • High consumption of salt • Low uptake of the influenza vaccine OR reduction in childhood vaccinations • Low breastfeeding practices • Irresponsible alcohol consumption • Low physical activity • Low hygiene practicesThen, you will need to choose a specific target audience (e.g. adolescents, older adults, voters, working age, doctors, students etc.) and a country/region (e.g. Australia, India, Lithuania etc.). a. Introduction
The topic selected for the study is “Bullying in school”. Bullying can be defined as the process when people intentionally and repeatedly conduct actions or use the derogatory words against individual or group. As an outcome, this risks the wellbeing of the individual or cause distress for them (1). Bullying is done by the people by the people who have either power or influence over others. It was done with the intention to make people helpless or powerless. Bullying can occur anywhere from schools to colleges to workplace. It can be verbal, physical, or emotional. It has been seen that bullying at school is very common.
All the countries in the world are constantly trying to control bullying at school. One of the disturbing facts about bullying is that it often accompanied by violence (2). Bullying at school has very poor impact on the growth and development of the children who are bullied. It also resulted in development of the negative personality of the children who bullied others. It has been seen that around 1 in every 4 students get bullied. According to UNICEF, 32% of boys and 28% of girls get bullied in schools every year (3). In Australia, from Year 4 to Year 9, around 27% of students suffered from bullying, it increases up to 32% in year 5 and 29% in year 8. It has been seen that 83% of student bullied another person. There is average of 1.2% are bullied in primary school and 9.1% per 100 students bullied in high school (4).
b. Factors Contributing to Bullying
There are five major factors, which can have major impact on bullying. These factors include psychological factor, family factors, school factor, socioeconomic factor, and media-related factors. There are many factors such as physical characteristics, social skills, processing, and intolerant environment can make the student victim of bullying (5). Psychological factors include psychiatric disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and autism. Generation of false pride and arrogance when teacher gives more attention to specific children is another contributing factor....
