Context This assessment aims to develop your understanding of the challenges involved in collecting, storing and managing data in an organisational context. It assesses your ability to effectively identify the benefits of a database system as well as your ability to build data models to simplify complex subject matters. Task Instructions 1. Please read the attached MIS201_Assessment 1_Case Scenario. 2. Based on the case scenario provided, please complete the following tasks: Task 1 (10 marks) Assignment 1, MIS201 Page 2 of 5 Design and create as many Microsoft Excel spreadsheets as you deem necessary to manage and store academic misconduct cases as detailed in the case scenario. Note one Microsoft Excel file may contain many spreadsheets. Task 2 (50 marks) A collection of spreadsheets created to manage the data are shared on network drive may experience many problems. Identify and discuss the problems with examples related to the case scenario with respect to data redundancy, data independence, data consistency, data integrity, data security and the scale of data sharing. Also, discuss whether — and if so how — a database system could solve most of the problems that a collection of spreadsheets on a file system would encounter. Please note that your response to this task should be 600 words +/-10%. You do not need to use a Report format for your answer. Use headings (e.g. Data redundancy, Data independence, Advantages of a database system) to structure your answer. Task 3 (25 marks) The University Management decides to develop an information system (the ‘System’) to address the cases study scenario provided with this assignment. The System shall facilitate the management of data requirements of the scenario provided in the case study, and shall allow easy generation of reports to the stakeholders of various levels. Draw an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) to model the data requirements of the system provided in the case study. Task 4 (15 marks) Based on the ERD you completed in the previous task, design database tables for the System. Provide the following information for each database table. Please note that ERD must be drawn using LucidChart or an equivalent professional diagramming software package. The Learning Facilitator will provide feedback via the Grade Centre in the LMS portal. Feedback can be viewed in My Grades. Academic Integrity When submitting their assessment task, students will be asked to declare the academic integrity of their assessment by completing and signing an assignment cover sheet. You can find the assignment cover sheet here All students are responsible for ensuring that all work submitted is their own and is appropriately referenced and academically written according to the Academic Writing Guide. Students also need to have read and be aware of Torrens University Australia Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure and subsequent penalties for academic misconduct. These are available at https://www.torrens.edu.au/policies-and-forms. Students also must keep a copy of all submitted material and any assessment drafts. Special Consideration To apply for special consideration for a modification to an assessment or exam due to unexpected or extenuating circumstances, please consult the Assessment Policy for Higher Education Coursework and ELICOS and, if applicable to your circumstance, submit a completed Application for Assessment Special Consideration Form to your Learning Facilitator. https://www.torrens.edu.au/policies-and-forms https://www.torrens.edu.au/policies-and-forms Assignment 1, MIS201 Page 4 of 5 Assessment Rubric Marking Criteria Fail (Yet to achieve minimum standard) 0-49% Pass (Functional) 50-64% Credit (Proficient) 65-74% Distinction (Advanced) 75-84% High Distinction (Exceptional) 85-100% Task 1 (10%) ➢ Design and creation of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to manage and store data as detailed in the case scenario. TASK 2:
As per the current situation ABC University has library database in a spreadsheet for all six campuses in metropolitan cities in Aust
ralia. It shares book and library details with the spreadsheet, which are manually entered by the admin in the libraries. The admin head can able to access the spreadsheet, where all other can access for read only mode. This kind of network shared spreadsheet will lead to some problems such are, data integrity, data redundancy, data consistency, data security and data independence.
Data Redundancy:
While using the spreadsheet for the database maintenance, the admin enter duplicate data or same data will be stored in the database, which lead data redundancy.
Data Independence:
We can not implement a data independency in Spreadsheet, where it can not be changed to a next level higher system without changing any design of the spreadsheet.
Data Security:
Data security is very essential while keeping the information or data in the spreadsheet, it should not promise for any corruption and theft of data, where all can read this data. And also it has personal information about students and staffs.
Data consistency:
We could not use data consistency for the spreadsheet where the data type will not be considered in each attribute.
A database management system (or DBMS) is nothing more than a computerized data-backup system. System users are provided with the...
