CASE STUDY: Organisational communication Dan Jameson was in a bind. After years working as a technical specialist, he was promoted to supervisor in his department. This required him to be responsible for people who at one time had been his co-workers, which created a good deal of resentment on the part of his co-workers. Yet he had business objectives to meet. Much was expected of him, and senior management was eyeing Dan for another promotion soon if all went well. After several weeks Dan discovered an unsettling communication pattern. Whenever he asked that something be done, his co-workers would nod in agreement. But hen he ime f he deadline came he e ec ed c me hadn ha ened J la Monday he met with Samantha and Ryan, telling them they needed to complete the computer drafts for the Winston project by the end of the business day on Thursday. However, the reports were still not on his desk on Friday morning. When he had finished talking to them on Monday, they had given him no response or indication that the project would not be completed on time. Dan thought he was communicating clearly. He had informed them of the deadline and simply left it at that when neither of them gave him a e n e Wha a hei blem Dan didn an c nde cend his subordinates by looking over their shoulders and checking on their progress, but he was afraid he migh ha e d hi if hing didn change n Case from De Janasz, Dowd and Schneider (2019, p 142). Response to Case Study Questions
Q1.
Considering the elements of the communication process mentioned in figure 7.1 and evaluating the case study it could be analyzed that the communication issues Dan faces rely on the feedback part. As whenever Dan pacifies a message to the employ
ee and the colleagues, he is both the sender and medium who transmits the message to the receiver. But after giving g the message he did not communicate or take feedback from the receiver regarding the facts whether they have decoded the exact meaning of the message or whether they have any problem or issue in accordance to the message that is imparted for them. As the issue presented here channelizes the one-way communication where Dan is putting his messages and expectations in from of the employees but is not seeking any feedback regarding whether they have understood the instructions and if not, then why they are not communicating on the matter.
The communication barriers Dan needs to overcome include-
Lack of Feedback-it is observed from the case study that Dan did not take any kind of feedback from their subordinates or the employees to whom he assigns any kind of tasks this is one of the most prominent barriers in this case.
Too Much Formality- the one-way communication where the other party just nods their head in confirmation represents that the communication process is very much formal. As Dan has worked with them as their colleague but if they are not sharing their problems with him and ignoring the works that completely means that the way of communication is very formal.
Lack of Interaction- the communication between the supervisors and employees should be interactive as in the case the problems exist and keep on repeating as there is no proper interaction between the supervisor and the employees (Jiang, Zheng & Lu, 2021).
To overcome this situation Dan, need to follow these strategies-
Taking Proper Feedback- the first thing that Dan needs to do is to take appropriate feedback from the employees whether they understood the tasks and the duties assigned to them properly or not.
Being a bit Friendly- too much formality sometimes creates a critical scenario where the people hesitate to share their problem with others. As they were the co-workers of Dan's so he should adopt friendly behavior so that he could acknowledge the root cause of the problem.
Proper Interaction- proper interaction is necessary to get the work done efficiently. Dan should ensure that he is interacting with his employees regularly so that a flow in the communication could be observed (Yokoshi, Segawa & Fukaya, 2019).
Q2.
Power and politicking are related to each other in one way or another. The most inherent aspect of power is dependency as someone has to be dependent on others for a unique type of support. In the consideration of the position, power plays a very important role as it is directly related to the decision a person can take base on his power range. With power, comes politics and the political skills of each person are different from the other. Considering the political behavior, it is said that it consists of the activities that are not required as an important part of an individual’s formal role but attempt to use some form of power basis to considerably influence the decision making. Politicking is...
