The interpretation of ethics varies from people to people but they generally are based on
the basic sense of societal and moral right and wrong. But in a business context a manager
sh
ould interpret ethics as something which involves making decisions that are at tune with the
societal, moral, and legal sense of right and wrong. In this 21st century with the rise in
complexities in almost all the aspects of our daily life encompassing emotions, behavior,
outlook, and so on, managers in business organizations are faced with ethical dilemmas in
myriad forms and today’s managers must be more prepared while confronting such ethical issues
so that the social and corporate reputation of the organization they work for is sustained.
Today’s managers are bestowed with numerous roles within an organization and one of
most important of such roles is the vital role of hiring new employees for the organization. It is
considered as one of the crucial aspects of the management position. And in this realm managers
often are faced with the ethical dilemma of adopting nepotism in their hiring process. Nepotism
is the “patronage bestowed or favoritism shown on the basis of family relationship, as in business
and politics” (Nepotism, 2012). But an ethical manager should remain abstained from such
favoritism which can deprive a legitimate competent candidate from getting the job in an
organization. Managers, in order to remain adhered to ethics, must see which candidate fits the
needs and wants of the organization and their role within it. The manager should also judge the
candidate on how that candidate can fit into the organization’s values and future visions.
