BTA202.XXXX: Intermediate Accounting II Instructions: Complete a 4 - 6 page research paper addressing the following: Choose one of the companies listed below to serve as the focus of your research paper. Note: A maximum of 4 students can research each company. Let the professor know your choice of company via email or in class by no later than the second week of class. 4. Microsoft Corporation NOTE: For all your research, you need to use THE MOST RECENT ANNUAL REPORT (Form 10-K) for the company you have chosen. Submit draft submissions via email unless otherwise instructed. Part A (+/- 2.5 pages) – (50 points) · Discuss the business of the company you selected. Your discussion should, at a minimum, include the following: Types of products sold, locations, business philosophy/corporate culture, mission statement, length of time in business, competitors. (10 points) · Which accounting firm audits the company that you selected? Why does the company have to be audited? Briefly discuss whether the auditors concluded that the financial statements were fairly stated or not. (5 points) · Refer to the Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A) section of the annual report for the company. In your own words, discuss two of the risks which this company faces. Were you surprised by these items being considered a risk? Why or why not? (15 points) · Provide an overview of the Financial Highlights of the company for the most recent year e.g. increase/decrease in revenue, expenses, change in assets, liabilities & stockholder’s equity, change in cash flows, earnings per share. (20 points) Part B (+/- 2.5 pages) – (50 points) Your friend, who has just recently received a large bonus at work, would like to invest some of that money. She has asked you whether it would be a good idea to invest in the company you are researching. What would you tell her? At a minimum, your answer should consider the following: · A brief discussion of the company’s recent financial results. How is the company doing? NOTE: you can refer to some of the work already done in Part A. (10 points) · Analysis of liquidity, solvency, and profitability for the past two years using ratios (no more than 3 or 4 ratios necessary). (20 points) · Trends in the company’s share price (share price graphs can be obtained from Google Finance, Reuters, Bloomberg, etc.). (10 points) · Any important news relating to the company and/or its competitors. At a minimum, two recent news stories should be discussed (10 points) Final Submission The research paper should be formatted to meet all of the following requirements: · Text should be typed double-spaced, using 12-point Font Size, Times New Roman, with 1 inch Margins (top, bottom, sides). · The paper should be a minimum of 4 pages and a maximum of 6 pages. · All pages, except the title page must be numbered at the bottom, right. · You may add graphics where you deem appropriate. This report is a formal, professional document. Use correct grammar and proofread carefully. All references (written and verbal) used to compile the report must be cited using APA format.
