Question 1 (30 marks) – Subnetting You work as a junior network administrator and you have been tasked by the senior network administrator to re-number the company’s internal networks. The company is organised as follows. The address space you have been given to work with is 172.23.64.0/18. Devise a subnetting scheme to efficiently accommodate this structure that also allows for some future growth in the number of locations, the number of departments in each location, and the number of staff within each department. For each subnet you need to provide the following details: • network address • broadcast address • netmask • maximum number of hosts per subnet Location Department Staff Sydney Head Office Administration 39 Accounts 67 Human Resources 43 Engineering 107 Sales 283 Marketing 174 Executive Team 5 Reception 7 Melbourne Branch Administration 27 Sales 21 Marketing 159 Engineering 99 Reception 3 Singpapore Branch Administration 46 Sales 91 Marketing 65 Engineering 226 Executive Team 1 Reception 2 Co py rig ht © 20 20 M ac qu ari e U niv ers ity. Question 2 (30 marks) – Research The role of the transport layer is two-fold: 1.To provide a communications end point so that packets delivered to a host will be given over to the correct process running on the host. 2.To potentially provide additional services or different delivery semantics than that provided by the network layer. In October 2000 SIGTRAN (the IETF Signaling Transport working group) introduced a new transport layer protocol called the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). a) What functionality does SCTP offer that is provided by neither UDP nor TCP? b) What functionality does SCTP provide that is offered by either TCP or UDP? c) Perform some research to find a case of an application where SCTP is utilised. i. Briefly describe the application’s transport layer requirements. ii. Describe how SCTP functionality fulfils these requirements. Your answer should include an explanation as to why use of this less well known transport protocol is worthwhile. iii. If SCTP was not available, briefly explain how the application architecture could be modified so that it could work over either TCP or UDP. (Hint: think about which layer certain functionality would need to be located if using TCP or UDP instead of SCTP). d) In spite of any perceived benefit, SCTP is not widely used. Why do you think this is? Co py rig ht © 20 20 M ac qu ari e U niv ers ity. Al l ri gh ts res erv ed . Assessment For all questions in this assignment not only content but also presentation will affect your mark. You will lose marks if there are problems with the presentation, particularly with clarity. This means that your answers to each question should be a coherent statement and that the spelling and grammar of your submission will be taken into account in assessing its presentation. For full marks, your answers should be well argued, clear, and coherent. The standards of marking described in the unit outline L.O. 1 and L.O. 2 will be applied to this assignment as relevant to the assignment topics. In addition, the following particular standards will be applied in marking this assignment: • Spelling and grammar: o Assignment submissions with more than 4 spelling or grammatical errors will not achieve a grade higher than distinction; submissions with more than 8 such errors will not achieve a grade higher than credit. • Clarity: o Ambiguous or poorly worded answers will receive a grade no more than a pass for the individual question. o Minor issues of clarity will receive a grade no more than credit for the individual question. • Correctness of approach taken and answer obtained: o Incorrect answers with the correct logic or approach will receive no more than a pass for the individual question. o Correct answers with incorrect logic or approach will receive no more than pass for the individual question. o Incorrect answers with no explanation of the approach taken or with the incorrect approach will receive a fail grade for the individual question. The questions will be marked individually, the marks totalled, and a final grade assigned that is no more than indicated by the total marks, and no more than allowed by the standards specified above and in the unit outline. Submission Submit on the iLearn page under ‘Assignments Section’. The submission is with a tool called TurnItIn. This cross checks for online papers and other student papers for any plagiarism (copying). In short – DON’T COPY – or get others to do your assignment, we are pretty good at catching people out and the consequences can be severe. Do not trust anyone who will take money to do assignments. They can take money from several students, return the same assignment, and you get caught. They don’t care about you, but we do! 1. IP addressing for Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore branches
The provided organization is maintaining three branches in different Australia
n cities: Sydney, Melbourne and one branch in Singapore. The table showing required IP allocation in each of these branches is provided below:
    Branch name
    Required VLAN's
    Required IP allocation
    Sydney branch
    8
    725
    Melbourne Branch
    5
    309
    Singapore branch
    6
    431

As the requirement of possible IP addresses is calculated and growth rate of 10 percent is also assumed, so, the required IP implementation for all these three branches is shown in below supplied tables:
    Branch name
    Sydney branch
    Network address
    172.23.64.0
    Subnet mask
    255.255.252.0
    Mask Bit
    /22
    Host address range
    172.23.64.1 - 172.23.67.254
    Broadcast address
    172.23.67.255
    Maximum allowed hosts
    1022
    Branch name
    Melbourne Branch
    Network address
    172.23.65.0
    Subnet mask
    255.255.254.0
    Mask Bit
    /23
    Host address range
    172.23.64.1 - 172.23.65.254
    Broadcast address
    172.23.65.255
    Maximum allowed hosts
    510
    Branch name
    Singapore branch
    Network address
    172.23.66.0
    Subnet mask
    255.255.254.0
    Mask Bit
    /23
    Host address range
    172.23.66.1 - 172.23.67.254
    Broadcast address
    172.23.67.255
    Maximum allowed hosts
    510
Based on the above tables, the required IP allocation can be possible for the three provided branches of Sydney, Melbourne and one branch in Singapore. The network addresses, subnet mask, mask bit, range of host addresses, broadcast address and maximum allowed hosts to created network are identified with help of above table.
2. Analysis of SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol)
The SCTP which is commonly known as "Stream control Transmission Protocol" is a IP suite protocol which mai9nly works on transport layer. This protocol is mainly developed to perform the telecommunication with combination of congestion control features provided by TCP and features of maintaining messages provided by UDP. So, it is basically a combination of features provided by both TCP and UDP. The SCTP maintains a reliable sequence of messages and provides complete control on them.
The provided features of redundant path and multi-homing are helping SCTP to improve its reliability and resilience in transport layer. The IETF is responsible for maintaining the standards defined for successful implementation of SCTP. The SCTP is introduced in October 2000 to overcome the issues provided by TCP and UDP while working in transport layer of IP suite. The byte groups are mainly created by SCTP for making transmission of any data. Different chunks in which each chunk is maintaining its own header are being created by SCTP. Creating the multiple chunks of the same data message is main ability provided by SCTP. It mainly maintains a unbroken byte stream for making data transmission and overcomes the faced issues in TCP. Like TCP, the SCTP is also stream oriented protocol and it allows the receiver to check total calls made by sender application.
The SCTP provides...
