Answer The stand-out economic characteristics of the macro-environment of the U.S. hotel lodging industry are many. The general economic characters may be the growth rate of the economy, the rate of unem
ployment, prevailing rate of inflation, and the rate of interest available in the market. These factors will have an impact on the hotel lodging industry’s business amount. Unless the boom of the economy is not registered, the industry may not flourish. Looking at the hotel lodging industry in USA, there are many hotel chains in the United States out of which 12 of them are the leaders in the industry. These hotel chains do have different branches among the same chain of hotels. Each of the hotels does accommodate a variety of guests like business class, families, and employees of a different amount, room and properties. Some of the hotels may have more rooms and fewer properties to generate more revenue as it happens in case of Hotels like the Marriot. But, there are other hotels that offer the equivalent amount of properties and rooms and earn less revenue. The projections of the hotel and lodging industry works out, when the economic conditions are supportive to the industry. Hence the stand out economic characters plays a vital role for every hotelier and need to be considered every time the hotels go for its business plan.
2. How would you characterize Joie de Vivre’s strategy for its Good Hotel brand? Is the hotel’s commitment to social responsibility an important component of its competitive strategy? Explain.

· Joie de Vivre’s (JDV) strategy for its Good Hotel brand is very pragmatic and realistic because they understand the psychological requirements of the customer. It is always evident that the consumer comes again when the need or requirement is full filled by supplying the products / rendering the services to the consumer where he has an interest. The concept of loyalty really works in this context.
· A response towards Green awareness programs by the hotel, gives a feeling to the consumer that they are connected to the environment safety and also a part of green initiatives. The feelings which every consumer carries by staying in such hotels are enormous as they are part of initiatives towards a sustainable life.
· The recent trend which every hotelier follows as a strategy is the green movement. In order to continue the sustainable growth and gain the momentum on the competitive advantage, hoteliers are forced to make the green initiative as a strong hotelier strategy. The reputation was established by JDV as it had created lifestyle hotels, which are of unique collections.
· The strategies like “good in us all”, “light hearted twist” along with the above said green movement which gained the competitive advantage, helped the hotel to generate more revenue. The hotel feels the “Green” movement has really attracted more customers who have much interest in the green movement.
