Case Study # 1: Analysis of Health Disparities
Rationale:
In this class, you will have an opportunity to examine major challenges and opportunities for health promotion, including disparities in health conditions across and within populations, as well as strategies for action. Experts now realize that quality of and access to medical care is not the only determinate of good health. Common everyday factors such as access to employment, hopefulness, and freedom from racism and discrimination are just as significant. Policies and other interventions influence the availability and distribution of these social determinants to different social groups, including those defined by socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, sex, disability status, and geographic locations. Principles of social justice influence these multiple interactions and the resulting health outcomes; inequitable distribution of social determinants contributes to health disparities and health inequality, whereas equitable distribution of social determinants contributes to health equity. Appreciation of how societal conditions, health behaviors, and access to health care affect health outcomes can increase understanding about what is needed to move toward health equity (Brennan Ramirez, Baker & Metzler, 2008, p. 10). Health Disparities
(HD) is the cornerstone of the COH605 course. HD refer to the differences in the quality of health care provided based on the lack of equity and the health outcomes affecting various groups. Furthermore, in the US - country of migrants, cultural differences should be included as a key factor in health disparities.

The analysis of a Case Study # 1 will illustrate the kinds of reasons that health disparities based on culture may exist. As foundation for the Case Study analysis it is important that students review other key concepts such as:
socioeconomic status,
poverty, race, ethnicity
andculture

in the provision of healthcare and healthcare outcomes.
