Case Study # 1: Analysis of Health Disparities

Rationale:
In this class, you will have an opportunity to examine major challenges and opportunities for health promotion, including disparities in health conditions across and within populations, as well as strategies for action. Experts now realize that quality of and access to medical care is not the only determinate of good health. Common everyday factors such as access to employment, hopefulness, and freedom from racism and discrimination are just as significant. Policies and other interventions influence the availability and distribution of these social determinants to different social groups, including those defined by socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, sex, disability status, and geographic locations. Principles of social justice influence these multiple interactions and the resulting health outcomes; inequitable distribution of social determinants contributes to health disparities and health inequality, whereas equitable distribution of social determinants contributes to health equity. Appreciation of how societal conditions, health behaviors, and access to health care affect health outcomes can increase understanding about what is needed to move toward health equity (Brennan Ramirez, Baker & Metzler, 2008, p. 10). This is the reason why the awareness of
Health Disparities

(HD) is the cornerstone of the COH605 course. HD refer to the differences in the quality of health care provided based on the lack of equity and the health outcomes affecting various groups. Furthermore, in the US - country of migrants, cultural differences should be included as a key factor in health disparities.

What are health and health care disparities?
The difference in health and health care between different types of groups and constituents of the society refers to the health a
nd health care disparities. These disparities stem from broader inequalities in the population. In general, health disparity is defined as a particular type of health difference between different groups of population based on their social, economic, or religious disadvantages. This provides a disadvantage in terms of health care to people who are based on their gender, ethnic group, socioeconomic status, and cognitive/physical disabilities. The center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified these factors of health disparities as the preventable differences in disease or health burden in the population of a country (Truman et al., 2011). It has been observed that there is a difference in the way of treatment and treatment facilities in the population-based on their social disadvantages. One common and widely observed example of health disparity is racism where people of one color are favored and provided with better health conditions as compared to people of another color (Azap et al., 2021).
Case study #1 is an example of disparity based on color. Here, the black Men’s clinic located in Chicago runs the project brotherhood to promote health equality among the society. In order to provide equality and social security to black men in the locality, the project brotherhood aims to create a safe and respectful society for black men. They created a place that provides a wide range of health and social issues-related services to these men which expands the range of their health care. The main activities that they provide with the help of...
