CASE STUDY
Maureen Decides to Adopt Vegetarianism
Maureen has always been a soft-hearted individual. She loves all manner of creatures and when she went away to college, she became aware of the fact that beef, lamb, chicken, and even pork chops came from living creatures and she hated the idea that these creatures were killed to provide food for her. So, she decided that she would no longer eat meat; she would only eat fruits and vegetables. She would, however, continue to enjoy small amounts of cheese, eggs, and milk. This diet seemed to be very satisfying, but after about 6 months of vegetarianism, she began to feel less energetic than she used to feel. She decided that she should have a check-up and her doctor ordered a blood workup. He discovered that she was anemic. She had far fewer than normal red cells and many of these cells were very small or were very large immature ones. What is going on? What would you do to help Maureen recover her joy of life?
