  • Case study: Michael is a 55-year-old man with moderate intellectual disability living in a community house in the suburbs of Dublin. He lives with 4 other men. He has a part time job assisting with manual work in a landscaping service which he loves. He has been unable to attend work for the last number of days because he developed a productive cough and a temperature of 38 degrees. The expectorant is purulent and he has been having trouble sleeping because of the cough, which is worse at night. He is complaining of general malaise and doesn’t want to eat or drink. He is very frustrated at not being able to go to work and gets angry quickly when he is told to stay in bed and rest.




Additionally, Michael has type 2 diabetes. He takes Metformin 500 mg BD and his diabetes is very stable. His height is 5.9 and he weighs 18 stone (114kg) and has a waist circumference of 44 inches.
